Memories of My Father: Trivia—who said it…? Name the Movie…

My father was a real movie buff. He seemed to know everything there was to know about the movies we’d sit to watch with him. He’d happily chatter away, to anyone who would listen, ringing out information, of: the year a movie came out, who the main actors were, who was gone, who was still alive, who was married to whom…  And this started a game with the family, “Who said it… In what movie…?” And it actually became a tradition, and one we’ve passed down and now play with our own kids, and even with the grandchildren.

I was a young girl when I began watching old movies with my Dad, and I paid very close attention when he spoke…about the movies, that is. It was with him that I first saw movies like, The Dirty Dozen, with Lee Marvin, Charles Bronson, Telly Savalas, Jim Brown, Trini Lopez, Clint Walker…a cast of many, The Longest Hundred Miles, with Doug McClure, Ricardo Montalban and Katharine Ross, Sayonara, with Red Buttons and Marlon Brando, The Sand Pebbles, with Steve McQueen, Candice Bergen, and Richard Attenborough, to name just a few, and including all the Clint Eastwood movies ever made.

There was a time we were sitting at a restaurant and my father happened to overhear a conversation from another table, they were discussing a movie; who were the actors, what year was the movie made…. And I saw him smiling, as if he’d received a trophy, because he’d already figured out the answers, and he’d quietly mumble it at our table. My father knew two things very well, his classical music and his movies.

Though my Dad is now gone, he left us with many great memories, fond memories of camping, playing Tag, board games, and of playing trivia with him.

How good is your knowledge of movies? Can you name the movie and who said the movie line?

  • “I’m not bad; I’m just drawn that way!”
  • “If you want to shoot, shoot, don’t talk!”
  • “We don’t need no stinking badges…!”
  • “Are you feeling lucky…punk?
  • “Are we…awake?” says actor number 1, “That depends, are we…black?” says actor number 2.
  • “Do you have anything else besides Mexican food?”
