Merry...err Happy Holidays! (a little late)
By Victoria from BHBH on December 27, 2012
I would NEVER be offended that someone told me to have a Merry Christmas, a Happy Hanukkah, or a Blessed Winter Solstice. I am however ridiculously offended when people have a problem with me saying Happy Holidays, or when they see Happy Holidays in public spaces.
There is even a Facebook page eloquently called "Its Merry Christmas not happy holidays bitch".
I've heard it a million times "Why do we have to be politically correct?", "This is a WAR on Christmas!", "ME ME ME ME ME", "but Kwanzaa is just made up" etc
That tidbit about Kwanzaa? well, every holiday is "made up", some have just been made up for longer (way longer, Solstice is the longest I believe). December 25th was most likely not the ACTUAL date Jesus was born on. This date was CHOSEN many years after his death. Does that mean you shouldn't celebrate Jesus on Christmas? Of course not! This is just extra reasons why you can't and shouldn't devalue someone's beliefs, rituals, and holidays.
Christmas isn't going away. No one is trying to make is disappear, or prosecute those that celebrate it. At least not in North America. Happy Holidays is about inclusion and togetherness, NOT oppression.
North American December Holidays:

Winter Solstice/Yule: December 21 or 22nd
Christmas Day: December 25th
Boxing Day: December 26th
Kwanzaa: December 26th - Janurary 1st
New Year's Eve: December 31st
