Michelle Ferrier is founder and publisher of LocallyGrownNews.com, an online community focused on local food and food policy. She is a farmers' market fanatic and is passionate about growing local communities through good food. She's affectionately called "The Plant Whisperer" by friends and neighbors who seek her guidance on gardening and cooking with seasonal foods. She started her kids off on "The Ferrier Smell Garden", an extravaganza of culinary herbs and has moved to full-scale backyard urban agriculture in Greensboro, NC. Michelle creates "seed bombs" for her urban guerilla gardening campaign in the Piedmont Triad area. Her favorite fruit is the tomato, in all its glorious variations.
Michelle has been developing and running online communities for several years before she started her own hyperlocal niche. She holds a Ph.D. in Texts and Technology from the University of Central Florida, a master's degree in journalism and is an associate professor in the School of Communications at Elon University. She is a former columnist, current journalist and part-time community activist working to install community gardens and raise awareness about eating locally.
