Microwaving Good-Bye!

I sat down one day, staring at my potato turning around in the microwave. I often found myself participating in this form of entertainment—waiting patiently for those three beeps, announcing my food was “done.” Then, one day, it dawned on me, “Why was I giving my family food whose water molecules were being spun around to heat it up?”

This form of cooking was never used, and suddenly (due to our instant generation) microwaveable food is every where. I really don’t see how it can be healthy. It seems very unnatural to me somehow. All these years I’ve really not questioned it, but now that I’m responsible for feeding my family it really started me thinking.

I asked my husband to put the microwave in another room that was far from the kitchen, making me have to think twice before I wanted a to prepare a quick meal. I found a small saucepan, and it became easier to warm soups and various other meals, and I really didn’t miss the microwave at all. It must have been a psychological thing about being lazy, and not wanting to go the distance just for warm food! Again, remember, I’m a product of that instant-generation.

The food began to start to taste better to me without the microwave. No more rubbery pasta or hot-in-the-middle soups. I began feeling good about myself in that I was serving my family a more naturally heated food. If my plan was to begin feeding them healthier foods, I should at least try to go healthy all-the-way!

One thing I have to admit I do miss about my microwave: those quick, five minute potatoes! I’m sure I’ll forget about them eventually—too bad that is going to take some time.
