Miley Cyrus on MTV Video Music Awards – The Video and My Opinion
So I did not watch the 2013 MTV Video Music Awards last night – but I now have my DVR set to record it so I can see all of it (and forward past what I don’t want to watch). What I heard so much of this morning was Miley Cyrus’ performance on the show so I had to find video of it and see what the fuss is about.
Well, she is raunchy in the video. I think she is totally getting the response she hoped for, and execs at MTV hoped for. We know that sex and shock sell. Heck, I am an example of this because I wanted to see what all the talk was today – I wanted to SEE it! And now here you are, reading and maybe watching the video too to form your own opinions about her performance.
Do I care that she is raunchy? Hmmm, most of me does not care. She is an entertainer and was entertaining her audience. Yes, she used to be a kid star but she is an adult now and she is trying to transition from a being loved by tweens – a limited audience – to being relevant to the older crowd. I can’t fault her for that. When I was younger I liked entertainers who gave something new and unexpected too. Music ratings started when I was a teen and if a CD had a “warning label” on it that was just a huge neon flashing buy me sign for me and my friends. Now the world is less restrictive on things like this and video is a hot medium. Miley is doing what many performers would. Heck, look back at Elvis even. Some people thought he was terrible with his hip thrusts and dancing and that his music was from the devil. Compared to today his music and his dance moves are quite tame – but at the time it was a big controversy. Having seen reports describing Miley as “obviously disturbed” is goofy though I think.
The one part of me that does care is the part that wishes, as a whole, that this would not be mainstream entertainment. However, I am a firm believe is self-expression also. This is one of those areas I see several different ways.
If I were a parent of a tween who watched the MTV show with Miley Cyrus’ raunchy act I think I would have expected some shocking moments to happen just based on past years. If it were something that I was really concerned about I would have not let my child watch it live – maybe record it and screen it first. But that is just part of parenting, the conversations that go along with why Miley acted this way, how it makes your child feel, what is a normal part of growing up and being curious about sex and bodies and such. We have to be a parent as a whole, not just bits and pieces.
So, here is the video of Miley Cyrus twerking on the VMA’s last night. FYI twerking is dancing in a suggestive fashion according to Wikipedia (yeah, I had to look it up too). The first part she comes out of a giant bear and dances around singing her song “We Can’t Stop” and then Robin Thicke appears on stage and they do a duet of “Blurred Lines”.
What are your thoughts on Miley Cyrus’ performance at the 2013 MTV Video Music Awards?
