of milk and honey
By Joyful Table on January 27, 2013
We hosted our first Tasting Party two weeks ago, featuring Monkeyflower Farms sheeps milk cheese, sold as Garden Variety Cheese, paired alongside Uvas Gold Apiary's wildflower and lavender honeys. You can read all about the tastings on our Joyful Table blog.
If you haven't tasted fresh yogurt, please make the effort to connect with the cheese makers at your local farmers market and ask about it. Unlike the store bought and artificially sweetened yogurt, fresh yogurt has a surprising, tart flavor and creamy texture. It's perfect with a drizzle of honey.
One of the perks of a tasting party is the leftovers, and we had some of the GVC fresh, sheep's milk yogurt, left. As I experimented with toppings, one of my favorites was the Friend in Cheese Jam Company's Lavender Plum Jam, with fresh blueberries. The smooth, gently sweet flavor perfectly balances the yogurt's tartness.
Friend in Cheese jams are small batch made specifically to compliment and pair with cheese. I'll be writing more about this interesting, Santa Cruz based company in upcoming posts. In the meantime, their website offers a number of cheese pairings to inspire you.
