Mississippi's Role in The Lives of Single Mothers and Their Kids

Single mothers do not always have it going for them. From time to time, they often reach a dead end when it comes to raising a kid with little or no income. More often that not, they struggle just to make ends meet.

Since the economy is not doing great as well, money matters can take a toll on most single parents. The state of Mississippi recognizes this and offers financial help to single mothers within the area.

Childcare Support

Childcare assistance is very helpful to many single mothers because allows them some time off from their children and attend to their jobs and responsibilities to earn a living. However, it is important to note how expensive childcare assistance can be. Single moms often do not have a choice but to make ends meet and somehow pay for such. Thankfully, the state of Mississippi offers some type of childcare support and subsidy.

Some of these programs include Temporary Assistance for Needy Families or the Child Care Payment Program - a federally funded program designed to provide parents with assistance with child care tuition. For more information and steps on how to apply, refer to www.mdhs.state.ms.us

Healthcare Assistance

Children need several medical services and the same goes for single mothers. Paying for both can really cost a lot and can even drain the income of the family. For single mothers having a hard time managing healthcare costs, they can apply for state assistance.

There are several aid programs which people can make use of. This is particularly available for single mothers with low income. Some of these programs include Children’s Health Insurance Plan (CHIP) as well as the Children’s Medical Program. These two programs are good for children without insurance and those who are suffering from a chronic illness.

Pregnant, disabled, blind and other single mohers can also refer to this site for other available healthcare assistance programs: http://www.coverageforall.org/

Food and Supplies

Food is a part of the daily life of a family. People cannot simply go on without food. For single moms with limited income, constantly feeding the household may be hard and may even be stressing for it cannot be sacrificed as an expense. For food and supplies needs, single mothers can avail assistance from the Mississippi Department of Human Services.

Some programs include the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) which provides subsidy or help in purchasing food items. There is also the Mississippi WIC program including the Mississippi Food Network.
