Missoni for Target: Is the Hype Worth the Quality?

In case you missed it, Target's website -- one of the largest retailers in the world -- crashed when they released their Missoni for Target line this morning at 6 a.m.

You would think that a store that debuts several designer collections a year and deals with Black Friday sales would be able to handle the capacity, but even they were overwhelmed

Following the hype on Twitter, I headed to the closest Target during my lunch break and scoured what remained of the limited edition collection at a Chattanooga, Tennessee location.

Every year, Target  partners with a designer  to produce a downmarket line. The success of this program has been huge. Some years, designers can translate high-end looks into dresses under $50 that look fabulous. Some years, they don't. This year's collection of Missoni for Target is good.

Given the hype of this particular collection (it seems bigger than Zac Posen or Rodarte), I'm not surprised.

High-end knit wear may be expensive, but knits translate in cheaper fabrics. Plus the brightcolors and patterns that Missoni is known for hit the Target demographic well.

However, the quality isn't there. I snagged the last pair of ballet flats in my size after seeing a number of Facebook friends comment that they couldn't find them at locations around the country. Since I was short on time, I threw them in my buggy and decided to think about them. After all, I can return them or put them up on Ebay.

There were virtually no accessories left -- a scarf, a hat and a handful of clutches.

These shoes, admittedly adorable, feel more like slippers. I'm tough on shoes, so these would not last long on me. For $39.99, I can find a decent pair of flats by Steve Madden, Ann Klein or Calvin Klein at Marshall's. Is the hype worth it?

I also picked up two shirts: a black and white cardigan and a multi-colored shirt. Usually, I turn my nose down at anything that contains acrylic. However, I bought into the hype and purchased them. I'm undecided if I'll keep them.

Releasing this during Fashion Week is smart, especially after news that their pop-up shop in New York sold out several days early.

Will you be stopping by Tar-jay and picking up anything today? Target's marketing is slick and has been for at least the past decade. But, s having a designer label worth paying top (Target) dollars for trendy clothes that are unlikely to last more than a season?

And if you think it was just clothes, look what happened to housewares. When was the last time you saw shower curtains sell out?

I love acrylic because I'm allergic to cashmere and I can get the soft feel. The only problem I see is with cheaper blacks, the color fades easily. I'll try to shop for nice cottons when it comes to black, but the budgeting is so hard right now.

I was bummed to find an amount of wool here.

I'm not hard on shoes, but for flats with no support, I just load 'em up with poron cushions. Still, I'm happy I found the pumps instead. There's are quality issues that mean they can be more painful, but this was a rare low-end shoe buy. I've sworn off cheaply-made shoes, and generally non-special ones too, but this pair is at least "special". I can make an exception, but I will try to use caution in the future, as well.

I also got tights, I got them in a larger size than I might wear, in case they would end up small and ripping. I hope they last, because if not, I'll be bummed. They feel thick, although of course not solid. Here's hoping.

What I really wanted was a towel; I was going to use it for the pool. Now I'll probably have to think of another way to show "fashion" in that "accessory" poolside. Hmm.

I love the Missoni brand but what's the point if it's not silk and cashmere? Even Stella McCartney's line for H&M was silk and cashmere.

As a curly-haired person, I'm not sure how much zig-zag and harlequin patterned gear I can carry.

I'm SO jealous!!! We don't even have TARGET up in Canada yet - so I can only admire from afar. I just love the look of it - i don't care if it's cheap! It looks so Boho-chic - has anyone seen the bicycle?

I heard about all the hype, but didn't even consider going to Target. And so glad I did not. Today I happened to be there to buy a gift and saw some of the things that were left. I was not too crazy about the designs, the fabric was and felt cheap.. just another hype based on labels. I like to buy things that will last and all of the items I saw... well, they will not.

I don't buy ANYTHING based on a label. Is there a logical reason I should? I can't think of a single one.

Sure, some labels mean consistent sizing, but even that isn't good enough for me unless it's on a shelf or rack that's been marked down to next to nothing.

I have also found that many store brands hold up better after being laundered. I've had too many "designer" shirts turn into wide short throw-aways after being washed - and yes, I follow label instructions; whereas, lesser brands seem to look the same after twenty washings.

Fashion, for me, boils down to price, comfort, looks, and long wear. And, as Gilda said, to things that don't itch.

I'll also have to say that the more expensive items tend to be the itchiest.

To sum up: a label has no meaning at all. If it were a total promise of quality, fit, and endurance, that would be a different story.

On the other hand, Sketchers shoes fit like a dream; the sizing is consistent; they're almost always on sale, and they carry all kinds of "looks." No, they didn't pay me for saying that; I'm just sayin'.

If I had money, which I don't, I still wouldn't spring for expensive labels. I'd rather spend it on electronics, scholarships, school supplies for poor kids, charities, and travel. How could I justify spending money on a designer's label shirt when that same amount would clothe a small child for the school year? Ridiculous.

Am I the only one who thinks of Charlie Brown's sweater?

ReneeCK 5 pts

GFDoctor I can't like this enough! I was thinking the *exact* same thing when I saw the ads...and then to repeat the pattern over and over and over. Garish!

I have a shirt I got at Macy's (a couple of years ago) and it's the same design, very well made - but I hardly wear it because of the horizontal stripes (I do not need the extra attention to the girth around my waist??)

Design is okay...not sure what the big draw is?

This makes no sense to me. I'm not anti fashion but from what I am seeing style wise is a flashback to the 1970s. This is not a good thing in home design. Or clothing.

I'm wondering if folks think that if the post the stuff on eBay that they are going to get a profit based on the more expensive stuff from the designer?

It might have more to do with making a quick buck. Cuz really, that much stripping is not pleasant to view in anything other than small, doses. I truly think this is verse 47 of "it is the economy."

Or brainwashing.

ellamode 5 pts

Gena Haskett But 70s is trending, so one can't complain it's out there or say it isn't in fashion.

I really like how my pumps are quite subtle, with just a LITTLE zig and zag. :-)

I love me some Tarjay, but I cannot imagine transitioning to fall at this point -- the summer weather is lasting forever!

MsKitty111 5 pts

All I can say is that horizontal zigzag stripes are not flattering on most of the population - I think I will skip all the excitement over this one.

I've been seeing all of those commercial about the launching of the "Target Missoni" line. I will check it out when I visit the store today, however, I shopped Missoni while in Italy...somehow I just don't think it will compare for me!

trigirl13 5 pts

Well. I had *no* clue it was going to be such a hullabaloo. I thought I'd drop in to the Target this weekend and see if I liked the Missoni clothes. Not likely, eh? Oh well. I'm sure I can find plenty else to spend my money on!

Maegan Tintari 9 pts

I have to admit, I'm not into "Designer lines for Target" ... it just cheapens the brand for me. :/

AmyMunday 5 pts

Target also supports politicians who are against gay rights. While they've provided us 'normal' folks with affordable designer wear, they've put up their marketing walls and pretended to be Sweden in a land of politico empires. I'll admit, Target is a nice super store and sometimes, you just need that for whatever reason. However, sacrificing our convictions is not worth it. Supporting anti-gay supporters because we are choosing to not shop at local health marts or local thrift stores happens, I know, but I think we should stay far away from Tar-jay every chance we get!

bmuserbher 5 pts

AmyMunday oh please..they have a number of corporations that you do business with that support child labor, environmental destruction and other human rights violations, i won't list them here but they have a list on globalexchange.org.. having said that NO one has to support gay "rights"..and by rights you mean marriage. Gays have rights, they are politicians,CEOS,famous designers, entertainers you name it..in fact they have more rights than non-gay people. Do you honestly think a straight person would have gotten away with dumping glitter on a gay person? Last I checked this is a free country and Target can donate to whom they want. If you don't like then don't shop there. I don't shop at companies that support gay marriage.

bellablue122 5 pts

What a hypocritical statement you're making. You're criticizing AmyMunday because she doesn't want to shop at Target because they support politicians who are against gay rights, while you end your comment saying that you don't shop at companies that support gay marriage. You are right--it's a free country, and if AmyMunday doesn't want to shop there because they go against something she believes in she has that right, just like you have that right.

Also, "[gays] have more rights than straight people" is the stupidest statement. Do you even realize how stupid this is?

I got to my Target at 8:45, and almost everything was gone. (At my mom's Target, the first two women in line bought thousands of dollars of Missoni merch- so if you really wanted something, I'm sure it'll pop up on ebay) I hadn't planned on buying anything, and wasn't impressed by the knit dresses at all. Of course, they were out of my size in women's clothing completely so that was a moot point. I picked up a knit clutch and matching beanie since those were things I'd need- and the beanie was the price & quality I'd usually get from Target.

kateri27 6 pts

I did buy a bra, a dress for Little C, an umbrella and a big old bag. Was it worth the hype, the knitwear seemed super cheaply made and horizontal stripes on a curvy girl, no thank you. I do wish I would have been able to find the shower curtain because I love all things black and white.

I don't understand it. At all. Maybe because I haven't liked the prints I've seen online?

sassymonkey Ditto. I don't really understand the appeal based on the prints I've seen online.

Sold out here too. A few of us went at lunch and everything was CLEARED, and I mean EVERYTHING. The only thing left were a few kid's sweaters and a lone glass in housewares. I've never seen anything like it. Astonishing.

Sold out at my Target. Completely sold out early in the morning.

I did, a few pieces, especially for my 2nd grade daughter, but of course I had to buy a dress for myself, too. I love Missoni, thought about half of the clothing pieces were beautiful and very well done, but I did not like trying to find something for myself and seeing women with 2 CARTS FULL (each) for their ebay stores...

Oh, so this is what everyone was trying on at Target today. I didnt care for the prints and I saw nothing that justified the higher price tag. I don't get into name brands anyway, basically you're PAYING for the designer to use YOU as free advertising. Totally beyond me, I guess.

I actually did score some, not the clothes, non-skinny girls in wavy prints are just not a good idea, and honestly the quality of some of the knit items was questionable. Everything looked really snaggable.

I didn't bother checking it out, except online. I just don't get the appeal of buying something with such an obvious print that everyone else is buying.
