Mix Max vs.Yodels: The Snack Cake Wars
By Kraken on October 23, 2012
A few years back, my husband discovered the Italian version of Yodels--Mix Max. Like Yodels, they are a mass produced, terrible for you, ruination of the world, snack cake. And to be honest, I'm glad the Italian aren't quite as perfect and superior--in culinary matters and lifestyle choices--as all of the Under the Tuscan Sky-like books, claim they are. They like junk food too!!!! Not all of them are foraging in the hills and creating culinary masterpieces. I guess what I feel is schadenfreude, which is described as, "delighting in others' misfortune". A New York Times article in 2002 cited a number of scientific studies of schadenfreude, many such studies are based on social comparison theory, the idea that when people around us have bad luck, we look better to ourselves. Other researchers have found that people with low self-esteem are more likely to feel schadenfreude than are people who have high self-esteem."
I think this quote explains a lot and you can read into it as much as you want.
Truthfully, we don't eat snack cakes often, mostly because I like to bake and even the worst thing I make is superior to either Yodels or Mix Max. And no one in my family needs the extra calories, we are on plump end of the weight spectrum.
This summer the kids and I decided--in the name of science of course--it would be fun to do a taste test and find out which snack cake is superior; Yodels or Mix Max.
First, we tried the Mix Max
Like Yodels they have a chocolate shell
And a cakey interior
Yodels have a chocolate cake and white filling vs. Mix Max's yellow cake and chocolate filling
Both have a satisfying crunchy exterior and soft and sweet interior, both have sweet gooey filling, both are delicious and addicting.
The results of the survey....
Verdict #1: My Opinion: Mix Max was slightly better, they aren't as sweet as the Yodels, the filling is creamier and the chocolate shell more flavorful.
Verdict #2: Everyone Else's Opinion: We took both kinds of snack cakes and five twentish-strapping-eating machines-nephews, camping this summer; the Yodels were gone before the sunset on our first day and the majority of the Mix Max came home with us.
