This Mom Declares “STRIKE” For Thanksgiving Dinner!
This mother does hereby revolt from assembling this year’s Thanksgiving dinner. I am not fixing my “usual” fancy fare; of mashed potatoes n’ gravy, or boned puff-pastry turkey, or creamed onions and green-bean casserole, or sweet potatoes and biscuits. No, I will not be talked out of my decision. So don’t pout or cry, don’t beg or threaten, and, certainly, don’t try to strike a bargain with me! For thirty years I have given my best and slaved in the kitchen, putting together all the fixings for a delicious and proper Thanksgiving meal. But this year, hear me all, I am on strike!
I realize that we’ve only just entered October, but I am here giving my loving familia and dear friends plenty of notice to make alternate plans.
In all fairness, I should mention that hubby has always been in the kitchen, working alongside me. But that still doesn’t lessen the workload; of shopping, of spending days in the kitchen preparing and making certain that all the dishes will be ready. And then there’s the cleaning up afterwards. No matter how much we try, at the end of the evening the kitchen can’t help looking like a cyclone ran through it. SIGH!
Though we have never minded cooking for our nearest and dearest, (there is great joy in knowing a crowd you’ve fed will never forget a meal you’ve cooked), there comes a time when one needs a time out from the repetitiveness, if not for a change of taste. I will be the very first to admit that our Thanksgiving meals have always been superb! Magnifique! Delicioso! Meraviglioso! Wunderbar! But that doesn’t change the fact that I am tired and need a frickin’ break.
FYI ~ should anyone be looking for me, and not finding me, I am incognito! I will not be answering the phone or receiving guests at my door. I will not be returning e-mails or letters either. I am, simply put, gone south for the winter!
Just out of curiosity, does anyone else feel the same about cooking Thanksgiving dinner?
