If you rush on over to Huff Post, you can probably still vote in the “Who’s hotter” poll by Bonnie Fuller. She has an article with a poll that declares that 40-something women are hotter than 20-something ones, at least as exemplified by celebrities.

But before you finish the keystroke that says, “Cindy Crawford is on MY team, we WIN!” ask yourself why we would ever be concerned with this, particularly in the current economic crisis. Who wins when the young actresses lose?

Not me. I wasn’t a winner when Farrah Fawcett was plastered all over and I wasn’t a winner when Madonna put her underwear on the outside, and I’m not a winner now that Cindy Crawford is posing in the buff, lovely though that is.  I don’t think they win either, particularly, and I’m pretty sure they know that.

Salma Hayek is an inspiring advocate for breastfeeding. Cindy Crawford has helped raise awareness on and funds for Leukemia, among other things.  Valerie Bertinelli has touched thousands of women with personal stories of her struggles as a married woman and with her weight. Michelle Obama is a direct and compassionate spokeswoman for the challenges facing so many women trying to balance family and community. Why is it that their appearance is our focus? They’re mothers, they’re people. And the young women named in the poll are people, too. Who knows what they’ll be in 20 years? That’s one of the great things about life, that potential to grow.

Maybe, in another 20 years, Lauren Conrad and Megan Fox will have made their marks as great philanthropists, teachers, and activists. Maybe Megan McCain will be Secretary of State. Maybe we’ll all know Anne Hathaway’s talents as a painter, and look forward to Natalie Portman’s new novel. Maybe they’ll grow to middle age without a few years where they have to wrestle with “MILF” as a term that is supposed to be flattering.  Flattering?

If you vote, vote no. Vote “I.don’t.want.to.be.distracted.by.vain.competition”. Vote “all that business about ‘judged by the content of their character’ applies to women, too”. Vote “try.to.keep.your.minds.on.the.realities.of.our.lives.and.not.on.our.surfaces”. Vote “We’re.not.cougers.OR.kittens”. Vote “Momma don’t play that.”

Vote no. This message is a public service from reality.
