momma needs her coffee (thoughts on autism & friendship)

I woke up this morning, and promptly wanted to go back to sleep.

That has got to be a bad sign when you're ready to go back to bed before your feet have even hit the floor.

I'm sure I'll survive stumble through my day without hurting anyone.

I've got a list of things to get done for this birthday party on the weekend and to be honest I don't even know where to start. I wish I had started planning this months ago so everything was already in place and it was just a matter of setting it all out.

The only problem is that I wasn't sure there was even going to be a party. When you're dealing with Autism, nothing "typical" is ever really certain...or easy. I tossed the idea around for a while - if we have a party, will there be an epic meltdown? Will he even enjoy a party? Would he rather just have his presents and cake with family like we've done every other year?

It was only a couple of weeks ago that I decided to do this...but only with 2 other children invited, and they happen to be brothers. The oldest is just 2 months younger than Superboy and they've been "friends" ever since they were babies.

I say friends but to be honest I'm not sure how much their relationship really register's for Superboy. At preschool he tends to have a "friend-of-the-day" that he will spend time around and play with if they engage him...but it's usually based on the color shirt they are wearing or some small detail that you or I would never think of. The other children try to play with him, but unless you're the one who caught his attention that day...forget about it.

Wait till tomorrow and hope you wear the right color or comb your hair the right direction.
