Being a Grandma

Being a grandma has changed my life in so many ways!  My grandson, Dylan, is the light of my life.  He has given me a chance to go back for a re-do.  I get a chance to make up for all the times I was impatient with my kids....more

A Giant of a Man

We buried my grandfather today.  It has taken a couple of days for the family to gather around, from far and wide through ice storms and blizzards.  At first I was fine and able to control my tears by focusing on my memories of my grandfather.... Grandmothers Missing Grandmothers: If Only I Could Recreate the Lost Soup Recipe

My maternal grandmother, who was called "Mother" by everyone in our family, passed away a few years ago.  For the last thirty or so years of her life, everyone who could gathered at her home for dinner on Wednesday nights.  Every Wednesday night.  In her last years, my aunts and cousins took over the cooking and prepared dinner. ...more

Facing Aging While Facing Snow

A blizzard.  The second one in a week.  Things are disappearing into big white piles -- cars, hedges and picnic tables.  There's a wonderful silence in the streets and sparkle under the street lights that makes me think of Edward Cullen.  I love it just as much as I always have - almost. ...more

Two Views of the Movie Avatar

A few nights ago, my husband and I took my mom to see Avatar in celebration of her seventieth birthday.  She met us at our house and off we went leaving the kids with a sitter. The next evening over dinner we were telling the kids how great the movie was, but that we couldn't take them to see it for another few years because it had a lot of war and battle scenes and other scary stuff we didn't think they were old enough to watch. ...more

Need an answered prayer?

JMJ Do you have a prayer request? A special need?  Well, I spent all night placing a live webcam to Lourdes, France on my website, including a little mailbox to their prayer request email.  All kinds of weird computer problems kept cropping up, and I kept offering them up as a prayer, which did help to keep me from being annoyed.  Then... This morning I got an email from a friend who told me that today is OUR LADY OF LOURDES FEAST DAY!  Wow.  I had no idea!  That is just so cool... ...more

Interracial Dating

I had originally posted the following on my go-to site www.MIAMIurbanlife.com as a forum discussion after being selected to be a discussion panelist for a live community panel following an off-Broadway show for next week. While my main goal is to see the thoughts and experiences of my local community at first, I figured I would expand the discussion to the open web hoping some would be brave enough to share. I haven't received as much feedback as I have been hoping for considering most of my forum discussions usually take off right away....more

Younger and Older -- Crossing Generations Builds Astonishing Friendships

I went to a birthday party honoring a serious transition -- a landmark, and even for a successful young mother with three kids, it had an impact.  So what did her sweet husband do?  He made her a present, with the help of his 5 year old son.  I don't want to violate their privacy with a description; just know that it was something that only someone who knew her well, and loved her, could have given her....more

Raising the extended family

I was one of those women who was never going to get married or have children.  In high school all I ever wanted was to be an astronomer and children never figured into the equation.  So of course I got pregnant in college.  The pregnancy was horrible and I spent the whole time I was pregnant terrified I was not going to love my baby.  Then she was born and when I saw her for the first time I felt like someone hit me in the head with a frying pan, the love hit me so hard.  Flashforward fifteen years, her father is long gone and I have met the man that I will eventual...more

Blogging Virgin Often Qualifies for Senior Discounts

I decided to learn about and begin blogging for a couple of reasons. I need to keep my brain challenged by learning new things.  I want to understand the challenges my daughter is facing as a parent in this constantly changing world where technology has created an entirely different environment for her to be parenting in than what I was faced with raising her and her sister. ...more
