Blanket and Beyond: What's Your Nickname?

My given name is Laurie (rhymes with "sorry", technically) to most people, much to the horror of the priest who baptized me and my third grade teacher Sister Patricia because although I was not named after a Partridge Family character it's still not a saint's name so basically to them I was Laurence. It's "Yo" and "hey" and increasingly, horribly, "Ma'am" to many more. Some people in a far off land I occasionally inhabit call me "Professor," that is when they're not calling me "Yo." Go ahead. Laugh. I do. ...more

Traveling Mom = Uncaring Mom?

The first time I had to leave my son overnight was difficult. He was eight months old and I had to attend an advocacy trip in Washington, DC for my job. I traveled to New York from Atlanta so that my mother could take care of him. I was nursing at the time and carried as much expressed milk as possible on the trip and also took along some formula for good measure. Although giving him formula was a rarity, I had to ensure that my mother was prepared in the event that my milk ran out. ...more

Letter Writing or E-mailing: Do You Let Your Kid Unleash Uncensored?

My five-year-old frequently asks me how to spell words, which is nice, because then I know exactly what she's writing (if not how her brain arrived at that subject). It's both exhilarating and terrifying to think soon she'll be writing her own uncensored missives and possibly SENDING THEM TO OTHER PEOPLE. ...more
