For some reason, in this country risk of serious injury or death isn't enough to get people to stop acting irresponsilbly. A national campaign has been launched called Focus Driven. It was started by moms who have lost children and even parents thanks to drivers who were distracted by talking on their cell phones or, worse, texting! The National Safety Commission reports that today 28% of car accidents are due to "illegal" cell phone usage.
When asked why people continue to drive and use their cell phones, the spokesperson for Focus Driven said that we began to use the techonology so quickly that no one knew the hazards and now we are addicted. While this may be true, it is not an acceptable excuse and we all need to DISCONNECT while driving. It is not just for our own saftely, but for the lives of the children sitting in the backseat or riding their bikes in the bike lane who don't have a voice in the matter.
Clearly stiffer penalties and laws need to be put in place to get people to stop using their cell phones while driving.
