I gave myself a pep talk on the drive to Boulder. When anticipating an event, rather than going in with low or high expectations, I try to go in with none whatsoever. This way, rather than wallowing in disappointment or basking in glory, I can take in the event as it is in that moment.
Well, that sounds good. But really, I waffled between high and low expectations for the Cornucopia of Local Market sponsored by the Boulder Farmers’ Market, Boulder Independent Bussiness Association, and the Boulder Outlook Hotel. Low because it has snowed more than once this fall in Colorado which could severely curtail vegetable availability, and high, well, because it’s Boulder. As I pulled into the parking lot of the Boulder Outlook Hotel after ignoring the directions my GPS gave me and taking a wrong turn, my expectation meter hovered at low–until I saw the smiling faces of the market-goers carrying bags loaded for their Thanksgiving table.
I took a lap. It was crowded. And it was sunny. I wasn’t used to having to pay attention to where the sun was when snapping photos.
I started with Red Wagon Organic Farm. All of this with no greenhouse. These are their last veggies of the season.
Cinnamon cap mushrooms and more from Hazel Dell Mushrooms. These are cultivated and varieties are available year-round.
Abbondanza Organic Seeds and Produce. They farm leased acres of Open Space in Boulder County and have a winter Community Supported Agriculture “Keeper Share.”
Regional Agricultural Supply had long pie pumpkins.
And some non-veggie vendors:
Turkeys from Wisdom’s Natural Poultry
Ela Family Farms. Applesauce made with apples at their peak. No sugar added (or necessary). Boy, was this good.
Haystack Mountain Goat Dairy. These guys are all over the country these days!
It wouldn’t be Colorado without Bison.
Good to know that hot dogs are back. Those must be some good hot dogs.
All in all, my expectations were far exceeded. I CAN find an abundance of local veggies close to my new home. Phew.
And then, I noticed this sign:
Stay tuned for next week’s Monday Dose of Market for Cornucopia of Local Part 2.
Have a Great Thanksgiving Week!
