Well, I’ve been in Colorado all of three hours and haven’t had time to go exploring for vegetables. So, for this week’s Monday Dose of Market, I thought I’d show you which vegetables I took with me on our move from Portland to Denver.
Yes, I took vegetables with me. At least as many as I thought I could get away with until my husband started mumbling about how we were never going to fit all our stuff in the car. (The veggies were too precious for the moving truck.)
I started with Willamette Sweet Onions because I’m not sure I can live without them. And some Italian Garlic from Salmon Creek Farm. Their garlic is from their private stash. They don’t usually sell it, they told me.
I had a mesh bag at home to put the onions in. They need to breathe and be stored in a cool dark place. Here’s a nice article on onion storage.
Then I saw the sign on Vicki’s Sun Gold Farm’s sweet potatoes. Brought to us unwashed and not prettied up for market to keep mold at bay. Will keep for the holidays. Score! Click here for tips on how to store potatoes.
And I am determined to make a pumpkin pie with real pumpkin this year. I got one pumpkin and one pumkin pie recipe.
And last, but not least, two of every squash. Two because, A: one isn’t enough. And B: because when my husband called while I was pondering which vegetables should make the journey with us, I thought telling him I was bringing home “two of every vegetable” would totally freak him out. And C: because I did feel a little bit like Noah, saving vegetable variety for the Couzens family. What if they don’t have this kind of squash in Colorado and I never get to try it? That would be tragic!
Ok. I didn’t take two of every squash (as I assured my husband on the phone after he totally freaked out). Vicki’s has so many that we would have had to rent a trailer. I left with just a few varieties and took pictures of the signs so I could remember what they were:
Upon arriving in Denver, one of our friends noticed my milk crate of vegetables as he helped us unload. “You’re really serious about this vegetable thing, aren’t you,” he said.
Yes, yes I am. Colorado here I come!
Have a great week!
