Help Me Pick a Breakfast Cereal!

I want to like cereal. I really do. It's more convenient than any other meal I can think of, and it has the potential to be really healthy. I just ... don't.

I know exactly why I don't like cereal: I didn't grow up with it. I was allergic to milk and soy as a kid, and rice and nut milks weren't as common as they are now. My choices were limited to a) eating it dry and b) eating it with nondairy creamer. Trust me: Once you try cereal with Mocha Mix, you're pretty much off it completely -- no matter what the commercial claimed:

Ugh.

But I know that so many people love, love, love their cereal. Just cruising through the BlogHer network just now, I came upon love songs to cereal by Paula of Salad in a Jar (the recipe's for raisin bran crunch cookies, which I could totally get behind) and Nat the Fat Rat.

I'm fine with dairy and soy (not to mention nut and rice milk) now -- so for BlogHer's Month of Breakfast I'm going to commit to trying cereal one day a week, and seeing if I can integrate such an easy morning meal into my routine. Who knows. Maybe I'll come to love it, too.

But I'm totally clueless as to what I might even like. I need your help!

  • I don't like super sweet food, especially in the morning.
  • I do like and am looking for something healthy.
  • I like the taste of whole grain.
  • I am still fairly uninterested in drinking a lot of flavored cold milk at the bottom of the bowl -- I have for cereal milk the level of distaste that Denise has for soup, so I think a cereal that has a nice texture with just a little bit of milk will help me ease into things.

What do you think -- can you help me find a cereal to like?

You might like the Kashi Good Friends cereal. Although it does have mysterious "twigs" in it.

This was my favorite back when I was unaware of my gluten issues - I still miss it! To be specific, this is NOT the Go Lean Crunch, which I found to be too sweet, but the regular GoLean. Loaded with fiber and protein!

Fabulously frugal recipes - for foodies. ( http://www.fabfrugalfood.com/ )

When you do find your brand, have it with yogurt instead of milk sometimes. topped with some walnuts and organic berries (check out Environmental Working Group's Dirty Dozen and Clean Fifteen list - free), it's a great morning sundae.

I tried the Kashi Cinnamon Harvest and it was too sweet, but the Autumn Wheat mini whole wheat busicuits are delicious. Just enough sweeetness and crunchiness! I love them with fresh bluberries, strawberries or bananas or a combination of these. Let us know what you end up choosing! :)

Cereal is one of my favorite foods and I've eaten it my whole life. My favorite has always been Honey Bunches of Oats with skim milk.

I started seeing a nutritionist last year and sadly she informed me that cereal is actually not a healthy breakfast at all. When you think about it, it's actually just carbs and sugar even if you get the "healthy" stuff. She encourages protein and fruit instead, but even oatmeal is a huge improvement nutritionally over cereal.

Anyway, I can't completely give it up so now when I do eat it I opt for Kashi GoLean berry crumble which I hope is a little less bad for me.

I had to eat Honey Nut Cheerios every day of my life growing up. It's the one kind I won't eat now, but it's not super sweet and tastes whole grainy. Our family really likes Frosted Mini Wheats. We call it "bum cereal." lol High fiber, you know. Kashi GoLean Crunch is also a good one. Kind of like granola, but just a hint of sweetness. Nice and crunchy, too!

Because I would like nothing more than to be able to quote Omar from "The Wire" when I make my shopping list up :)

I'm not a sweet cereal person, at least at first, but I've passed these recos on to my husband who loves the first two and is extremely intrigued by Life Cereal now.

Thanks, Elizabeth!

That's an awesome name, and if your cereal-hating 14 year old likes it, I bet I might too. Thank you!

You hit all the points on my list with this one!

I am trying out a lot of hot grains that aren't oatmeal (which I like at times but tastes ... oaty). I really like Bob's Red Mill brown rice farina - can go sweet with honey or savory with broth and is whole grain.

Thanks Maria!

I like Weetabix from the UK. Healthy and delicious with fresh fruit, some flax, and walnuts. My 14 year old (who hates both milk and cereal) always begs for a bite whenever she sees me eating it. My 17 year old loves Peanut Butter Bumpers by Mothers All Natural. I enjoy it as well.

It adds just a touch of sugar and all the whole wheat crunchy goodness. Or Honey Nut Cheerios, again just a taste of sugar. I also like Life Cereal.

With the Cheerios you can always add fresh fruit. Blueberries or bananas are a my preferred fruits.

Crunchy, not too sweet, nutty, grainy, pairs well with fruit and absorbs the milk and stays crunchy without too much left over unless you drown it. Worth a try :)

I'm the opposite in that I have similar lack of love for hot cereal but I tried some multi-grain this morning and it was not bad. I might even try it again.

Good luck in your quest!
