The most confusing piece of clothing known to mankind

I've learnt a lot during my first eight months of parenting. There's the life changing, deep stuff; the practical, how-to stuff; and then, last but not least, the completely trivial, amusing stuff. This last category contains facts that make you no wiser, but that never cease to amuse. Like, for instance, the fact that the most confusing piece of clothing known to mankind is the blue baby dress. Yes.
If, say, you dressed your baby girl all pink from head to toe, chances would be pretty good for passers-by to realize that it's a girl, causing them to ask questions like "how old is she now?", or, "what is her name?". If, on the other hand, you have a boy and you dress him in a cute little denim, wildlife t-shirt and have a matching blue blanky, 99.9% of strangers would realize that it's a boy. (Don't be fooled, you do get the occasional kind stranger who stares at your little all-pink bundle of joy for a full five minutes before asking if it's a boy or a girl. I usually give these folks the benefit of the doubt and attribute the mix-up to colour blindness.) But try dressing your baby girl in a blue dress and all confusion breaks loose.
Somehow the fact that the said blue dress has a gazillion bows and frills and ten Hello Kitty pictures on it, makes absolutely no difference. The cute little flowery hair clips also go completely unnoticed. The dress is blue and therefore your kid must be a boy. Oi.
In defence of the confused, I must admit that all babies do kind of look similar - you know, chubby, small and cute? But, please, next time you plan to ooh and ah over someone's little one and make mention of his/her gender, make sure to notice the bows. They're a dead giveaway.
