Her story is not meant to freak you out, but instead to be a warning bell to backup your blog. Issa's Crazy World had more than just a moment of panic when she discovered that her entire blog was... gone. Hackers had gotten into her account and took over the space. Her host was of no help.
It’s not just my words that I lost this week. It was my heart and soul. I pour both into my posts and they felt stolen. I have felt very violated this week. I still do, even though I now have a place to call my home again. It felt like someone came and hacked off my leg. I needed that leg. I need that leg. This has been emotionally and mentally exhausting... Friends, I want you to learn from my mistakes. Back up your blog. Send a good back-up to your email once a week and keep it. Don’t trash them like I did. Keep them. If you don’t know how and trust me, I don’t either, then please go see this great post by Schmutzie.
Of course, I took her advice after I read her whole post (which contains important tips on how to protect yourself too. Read it!) and turned to the great Schmutzie.
Schmutzie has compiled a post of how to back up your blog in various mediums such as Blogger, Wordpress, and Typepad. As she explains,
This kind of thing breaks my heart. Our weblogs are our homes on the internet, the frameworks that house our personalities and hearts and often careers online, and this kind of loss can seem insurmountable. This is why I decided to round up a few short articles to help you back up your weblog data and try to keep your work safe.
I would love for people to add their advice in the comment section below for additional ways people can backup their blogs -- what services do you use that you love? Which ones are difficult to use? What advice do you have for someone whose blog gets hacked and they haven't backed up their blog. Let's compile the most complete list of advice so this doesn't happen to another person.
And please, for the love, go backup your blog!
