If your mom is the kind of person who prefers a donation to a physical gift, below are a few ideas. Please feel free to add more do-good Mother's Day gift ideas in the comments.

* Room to Read's Girls' Education program. During the month of May, all donations made to the Girls' Education program will be matched (up to $100,000) by an anonymous donor.

* U.N. World Food Programme to help a mother feed her child. Create an interactive card for your mom on the U.N. World Food Programme's Wall Against Hunger. If you have trouble opening the donate link in Firefox, like I did, try it in another web browser.

* Women for Women International to support women survivors of war. Your mom will receive a a handmade card made by a woman in their program in Rwanda. Donate before May 5th to make sure she receives her card on time.

* Sierra Club to support wilderness areas like the Giant Sequoia National Monument, Grand Canyon National Park, Everglades National Park and the Arctic National Refuge.

* Oxfam America Unwrapped and fund virtual gifts like a pair of school uniforms for $20, or planting 50 trees for $30.

* One of GlobalGiving's "Mom Knows Best" projects like Education for 900 Rural Girls in Burkina Faso or Fast Tracking Education for Women and Older Girls in Afghanistan.

* A Kiva.org gift certificate so your mom can choose a woman entrepreneur to give a loan to.

* A Good Card from Network for Good your mom can use to donate to the nonprofit of her choice.

Hi Britt,

I was sorry to have been unable to atten the NTC this year as I would love to have met you in person. Just wanted to stop by and share a link to my post on "How Many Charities Miss Opportunities to Raise Funds and Awareness on Mother's Day." Thanks!

My 93 year old mother declared "no gifts - make a donation." I plan to donate to our local animal shelter. Through my mother I learned how animals enrich our lives, from the wild birds she has always fed, to the long list of pets of various species that were part of our family. She taught me to love all creatures great and small.

Thanks for sharing your site and video about the origins of Mother's Day.  I wrote a blog post for about Mother's Day's origins for BlogHer a couple years ago: Mother's Day for Peace. ( http://www.blogher.com/mothers-day-peace )

My organization's campaign Take Back the Day (www.takebacktheday.ca ( http://www.takebacktheday.ca )) shares the roots of Mother's Day in women's activism, and raises money for women activists working for peace and social justice. Visitors can watch our "Feminist Heritage Minute" about the history, and buy e-cards celebrating this history through making a donation to Inter Pares. We're an international feminist organization in Canada, partnering with activists around the world (mostly in the global South) who are promoting women’s rights and positive social transformation in their countries.
