Mother's Day & New Nicknames
By Kraken on May 15, 2012
This Mother’s Day was the best one I’ve ever had. Why? Did my family spoil and pamper me? Did they lavish me with jewels and extravagant gifts? Did they indulge my every whim?
What made it a truly memorable and special day are my realistic and flexible expectations. After many disappointing, tear-filled-Delphinium-killing (while I was grocery shopping one Mother’s Day, my family accidentally “weed” out all of my newly planted delphiniums)Mother’s Days debacles…I got real.
I don’t have a Mother’s Day; I have a Mother’s hour. My family will do whatever I want for one hour. I make the most of my family’s indentured servitude. My kids help weed the veggie garden and my husband takes my embarrassingly, filthy, minivan to the carwash. After my hour, it’s back to normal…laundry, shuttling kids around and chores galore. I even cook my own Mother’s Day dinner; it’s just easier on everyone if I do it.
My family has Mother’s Day traditions; each of my children gives me a precious gift, a handwritten love letter. They list all of the things that I do for them, my kindnesses and give me credit that I don’t deserve. I have a special box that my letters live in and one day, when my children are grown and making families of their own, I’ll give them back.
This year we tried out a new tradition. My oldest daughter and I volunteered to help cook for a Mother’s Day benefit breakfast for our local Community Center. I hope they do it again next year it was a perfect way to start my Mother’s Day; giving back or being in service to others, feels good. Feels right. Feels like I belong. Feels like family. I couldn’t have asked for a better way to start my day.
On a completely unrelated note; my husband has given me a new nickname: Krapoleon. It’s a combination of Kraken and Napoleon because I’m The Kraken and a Little General. The man cracks me up and that’s why I love him to pieces!
Below are a few picks of what's I've been up to
Going to crew regatta's
