A must do on a Tuscany Trip

The Palio was my favorite on my trip to Italy.  People travel to Siena from around the world to witness this horse race.  There is just so much community and culture involved in the races, how could anyone not want to join in?

I was lucky enough to participate in the trials and the actual Palio.  I actually was right against the fence during the trials!  That is million dollar seating at the Kentucky derby!

At the trials people go absolutely crazy!  Each neighborhood has their own song with lyrics that make fun of other neighborhoods.  Lyrics saying you sister goes to the brothel, your dad does this, your mom does that!  Quite funny.

Very Serious...But they did get loud!

Horses all lined up!

On the day of the Palio we saw the blessing of the horses, the parade and the Palio.

Each neighborhood, contada, brings their horse into their church to be blessed.

The parade goes around their contrada, to the duomo and than the square.

To get a good view of the Palio I suggest standing where the ground is higher and arriving two and a half hours earlier.  Yes, I arrived that early for a five minute race.  It was 100% worth it.

Plan next year's Tuscany Trip for August to see the Palio!
