"What the! Ump are you blind? You need to go see an eye doctor!" or "Really? Really, come on now!" and my favorite "THAT'S RIGHT! BABY GIRL JUST LIKE THAT!" All words yelled from my mouth this baseball season as I watched my girl pitch in the Little League Majors. She did not get the opportunity to pitch much considering the coach had grandsons on the team. Actually I hated the way she was often treated, but kept it status quo at the request of my daughter and did not go ape poop on people. After all this was her time not mine. She had a shining moment this season that will rank high on a list of highlights in her sports career. She got called to the pitching mound after being relegated to right field where she could stand swatting at gnats. She just was not the girl they thought she would be when they pulled her up to the Majors out of Minors. The only girl on a Majors Little League team in our town this year! What did they have to loose by pitching her? Heck we were down already, getting completely clobbered by a much more mature team. It was already two outs. So here comes one of the best hitters in the league and they call her to the mound. She looked around like, "Who me?" pointing to herself with her glove on her chest.
So there she stood ready to pitch after taking deep breaths. "Ball.." the ump called with her first pitch, I sat on the edge of my seat. The batter from the opposing team was a 12 year old who was 6 feet 2 inches tall and man could he swat the ball. He had already hit a home run. Second pitch "STRIKE!" and he swung at it! The seasoned batter shook his head in disbelief and his coaches pumped him up from the sidelines. 3rd pitch "ball.." I was biting my nails by this time. She looked defeated for a brief moment but took another deep breath, "STRIKE!" Would she? Could she? I was afraid to watch her next pitch, "Ball.." "Oh man" I thought and yelled out to her to relax! She does this thing when she pitches, shrugging her shoulders and moving her head from side to side.
This is known as the hitters count, 3 balls and 2 strikes. I noticed the team that was warming up to take the field next had lined up on the fence to watch her final pitch. In slow motion I watched the release of that beautiful throw and clenched my hands as it glided over the plate into the catchers glove. He swings and "STRIKE!'" The crowd erupted and shouted her name, her coaches and team mates all rallied around her.The star hitter walked off defeated by this pitcher, this girl with a capital GIRL pitcher! Even though we lost badly everyone was on a high because this girl pitcher had just struck out one of the leagues best hitters. To his credit he did high five her at the end of the game and told her "Great Pitching!" The only part I am upset about is that I did not film it!
So when I heard that Chelsea Baker was going to be featured on ESPN's E60 and I sent the link to my daughter on Facebook she commented "That should be me..." and I commented back..."Yes babygirl it COULD be you." So now she practices her knuckleball, the pitch Chelsea Baker has perfected. If you are not familiar with Chelsea Baker take a peek at this teaser. Then on July20, tune into ESPN"s E60, check your local listings, sit your baseball player down, boy or girl to watch. Bet you will never say "She throws like a girl!" again....I'm just sayin...
