My Halloween Resolution To Avoid Candy

To eat the candy, or not to eat the candy? That is the question.

Halloween is a tough time for anyone trying to avoid sugar and weight gain. My weaknesses are frozen Snickers and M&Ms. It's going to be hard, but I am going to try my best not to eat any Halloween candy this year. I know moderation is best...But, once I start eating the candy, I can't stop. So, I'm making a Halloween Resolution this year, to not eat any candy at all.

But, if you're looking for some less radical ways to avoid sugar and stay healthy during Halloween, check out some of these posts...

From The Mom Spot - A Happy But Healthy Halloween...

Finding fun treats that fit the nutritional guides can be hard (make that almost impossible). But I've been able to find some great ideas, and I wanted to share them with other moms who are faced with the very spooky Sugar-Free Halloween.

From Parent Dish - Healthier Halloween Treats...

My husband and I share the personal opinion that we're doing our kids a favor by eating their Halloween candy at night. After all, they don't need the sugar, right? Of course, neither do we, but we don't usually acknowledge that fact while fighting over the last mini-Snickers bar.

From Wifezilla's Way - The Halloween Dilemma...

Halloween is coming up and I have been off sugar and refined carbs for almost a year and a half now. The candy displays at the grocery store are almost impossible to avoid and I am so torn about what to do when the neighborhood kids come to my door Halloween night. Do I stick to my low carb convictions and give the kids Slim Jims instead of candy? Do I give them dark chocolate, reducing the amount of sugar I am giving them yet still give them candy? Do I give them little toys or coupons?

From Being Healthy For Busy People - Trick or Treat Temptations...

Unfortunately, giving in to temptation is all too easy. I know that if we don’t watch ourselves, we’ll eat all the candy, restock, and eat all the candy again before the first trick or treater can even ask us to smell their feet and give them something good to eat. To avoid that, I’ve come up with a four step solution. Here it is for all of you.

  • Buy candy later: Do not buy the candy for the trick or treaters until a few days before Halloween. That cuts down on the time you have to eat the candy.
  • Buy candy you don’t like: Make sure to pick candy that you don’t like. That way, you are much less tempted to eat the forbidden candy.
  • Hide the candy: Put the candy in an inconvenient place to access. Hopefully, hard to get to candy that you don’t really like, won’t be as much of a temptation.
  • Give the candy away: Give away all the candy, even if that means giving one of the late arriving trick or treaters a pound of candy. At that point, the candy becomes their problem and not yours.

The important thing to remember is that Halloween is fun because of the costumes, the movies and the parties, not the candy. The candy is for the kids. Let’s emerge from the fire of the trial of the first of the end of year holidays with our health and physiques unscathed.

From That's Fit...

If I were granted one wish for Halloween, I'd wish all the candy would disappear on November 1. Halloween is my favorite holiday, but I hate the pile of candy that lingers past Thanksgiving. Those mini-candy bars whisper my name daily from their plastic pumpkin house.

So I headed over to see what the successful pound-droppage operation, Weight Watchers, had to say on the matter. In their Halloween Help Guide, WW members offer seven tricks to avoid the treats -- here are my favorites...

I know what you mean! Its after halloween that I have the hardest time. I cope by picking up a few pomagranates, cranberries and pears (Which are in season, so they are cheaper, and usually the tastiest at the market!)

Can't wait for your post about stayin away from Christmas cookies!

Hang in there.

I have lived in numerous places throughout the US and have, in some neighborhoods, had very nice Halloween experiences.  Last year was my first one in Arizona and I have to say I became disenchanted.  There were a few (mind you few means 3 -4) cute costumed kids at my doorstep...and for that I was grateful.  However, the majority of visitors were noneother than high school kids in the same clothes they wore to school with a pillowcase in hand.  Not my cup of tea.  And like your post...I certainly DO NOT need the candy in the house.  Period.  So, this Halloween I am off to a movie or dinner with the lights off and the trick-or-treaters can just find their wares elsewhere.  Sorry to be a drag...just not worth it to me though.  I have enough of a problem putting down the Reese Cups.

I am with you Catherine. I plan to eat 0 candy this year.  I usually go hog wild. I just recently cut sugar out of my diet altogether. I've been trying to follow the Sugarbusters diet book. So far so good.  I don't really feel deprived and sweets have usually always been my weakness. Thanks for the tips everyone!

Hey Sheila.  Thanks for your comment.  The hardest part from me is after Halloween, when all the candy is 50-75% off.

Great topic! It’s about that time isn’t it. The grocery store aisles are lined with bags upon bags of every kind you can imagine. Snickers used to be my favorite.

I think what has helped me most, in curbing at least some of the cravings, is the knowledge that I now have regarding what actually is in some of my previous favorite treats. They are not quite as appetizing as they used to be. Don’t get me wrong, I still have my weak moments, which is exactly why I do as you mention above and don’t buy my favorites!
