I just finished reading James Chappelear’s tribute to Mr. Bryant Harrill, the father of my dear friend, George Harrill. After I finished reading the tribute, I was sad because, I know how much everyone will miss that dear man.
But today, I want to write about my hero, someone who has done more than has ever been asked of her without even a thought. I can’t tell you the number of times I have called her in the middle of the night when I was at my wits end with either my child or my husband. No matter what is going on in her life she always is there to listen to me. But even more than for me, she has been a rock for her family.
She still made Thanksgiving dinner, she still kept her own house in order, and never complained.
I saw a picture of the Harrill family gathered after Mr. Bryant’s funeral all smiling and looking happy. One granddaughter was standing on the front row holding the flag grinning from ear to ear.
And there she was, Josie Quick Harrill, a true angel, and my hero. She wasn’t smiling. She was in mourning. She had just buried a man who has been like a father to her.
Josie took on her father in law’s machine shop. She took care of his business, cleaned up old debt owed to them, and straightened out messes no one knew even existed. Then, there was Mr. Bryant, a full time job on his own. Josie went over every morning, she got him dressed, fed him breakfast, and made sure he took his medicine. For lunch every day, she didn’t go home, she went to make sure Mr. Bryant ate his lunch and laid down for his nap. She hired and managed the sitters and housekeepers for him. She took him to the doctor, bought his groceries, bathed him, changed him, fed him, and cleaned his house. She did everything a daughter would do. I prayed for her every day. She never complained. She never stopped.
I want everyone to know how much I love this girl. She is my best friend. She is my sister. I can only hope that one day I can be half the woman that she is.
