How Do I Know If I Should Homeschool My Kids?
By Mouthy Housewives on August 06, 2014
Dear Mouthy Housewives,
My husband really wants me to homeschool our two children, ages six and eight. I am a SAHM so I have the time, but I don't see what's wrong with public schools. He thinks they would benefit academically, and maybe they would, but I worry they'd suffer socially. I also worry that my mental health would suffer, but maybe I'm wrong. Is there any way to know if homeschool is a good fit for us?
Am I Homeschooling Material?
Dear Am I Homeschooling Material,
Let me start off by telling you who is not homeschooling material, and that would be me. I would never be able to handle the lesson preparations, the teaching, the grading, and all the other time commitments. I mean, some days microwaving<> chicken nuggets sounds exhausting so I leave "academically preparing my children for their future" to those more qualified.
But homeschooling> can be the right choice for some families. I would do a lot of research. All you have to do is google " homeschool" and you will get a lot of different opinions on the topic and some great information. Just don't accidentally google "gnome school" because I think you'll just find advice on training to be a garden gnome.
I would definitely talk to families who currently homeschool because they will be able to share the pros and cons of going this direction. I wouldn't be too worried about the social aspect. Homeschooling families often do activities together, and you can also sign your kids up for lots of different sports, arts or other programs where they will have contact with other children.
But in the end, this has to be the right decision for your entire family, and that includes you. You can't be pressured into this, because it's going to take up the bulk of your day. And remember, whatever you choose to do, it doesn't have to be permanent. You can always try it for a year and see how it goes.
