My Life With Arachnoiditis

Since I spoke so much about this spinal disease I have in my profile, I figured that my first post here would be to let you all know exactly what Adhesive Arachnoiditis is and how you can get it. It's a lot easier than you think, believe me.

First of all, arachnoiditis is, as I said, a spinal disease where the middle layer of your spine, the arachnoid layer, is basically destroyed. This arachnoid layer is where all of your nerve ending in your entire body are housed. They are supposed to be limp and pliable, kind of like spaghetti. With arachnoiditis those nerve endings become tight, brittle and adhere to the walls of the casings, if you will, by scar tissue. This disease causes intractable 24/7 pain. I'm not kidding. The pain from this disease has been described by several in the medical profession as that of a cancer patient but without the relief of death. No, arachnoiditis will not kill you, but it willmake you wish you were dead some days. The pain is unrelenting, non-stop and severe. There is no cure for this disease and the ony treatment known is to treat the pain. Just like a diabetic needs insulin, arach patients need narcotics. many doctors are reluctant to prescribe narcotics.

I promised I was going to let you know who you can get arachnoiditis. Any stick in the spine has the potential for causing arachnoiditis. Let me repeat that. ANY stick, puncture, shot, injection, etc, in the spine has the potential for causing arachnoiditis, especially if the dura is punctured. This means that you can get it from epidural steroid injections, dye that is injected in your spine during a myelogram AND, now listen to this, AND obstretic epidurals, that thousands of women use everyday in childbirth. One question. How many of you haaving a baby were told that the epidural you were going to have during labor could cause an incurable disease? I venture to guess that not ONE of you were told this. Why> Because arachnoiditis, for the most part is a medically induced disease and there is not one person in the medical field is willing to admit that they are causing harm. Of course they don't want to own up to it! Very few medical chools even teach arachnoiditis. Very few doctors will admit to even knowing about it. They like to give it names such as "failed back syndrome" and "chronic pain syndrome." It's neither of those things. It is ADHESIVE ARACHNOIDITIS and IT IS CAUSED BY YOUR DOCTOR!!

I am speaking to the young women of child-bearing age, now. Please listen. Each time you subject yourself to an obstretic epidural you are risking contracting this disease, which, in many cases, can lie dormant for as much as 20 years! And then one day, you wake up and cannot walk. One day you wake up and are in pain so severe you actually comtemplate praying to die. I am not exaggerating, Ladies. I promise you. type arachnoiditis into your search engine and see what you come up with. You'll be amazed.

I want to change policy in the medical field. I want for every doctor who even thinks of using a needle in someone's spine be required by law to let that patient know that he/she is in danger of being crippled for the rest of their lives. I want the medical profession to take responsibility for the thousands and thousands of us who are suffering with this disease. I want for us to be taken seriously and for us all not to have so much trouble getting the pain meds we so desperately need just so that we can have some kind of quality of life.

I guess that's wnough yelling for my very first post here. But look forward to more. Arachnoiditis is a diseaseIi don't plan to shut up about anytime soon. I'm just thrilled that I've found a new place to shout about it.

Until next time....Happy Superbowl.

Kara,
I really hope and pray that you see this. I feel awful that I have only now just seen your story. How horrible for you! I cannot imagine what horrors you have been through all because of a stick in your spine!! And it was arachnoiditis all the time, too. My GOD! I hope you've gotten yourself and attorney and are going after the medical people who did this to you. They need to be held accountable for what they have done to you. If they aren't then they are never going to stop this horrible practice of ramming needles in women's spines! PLEASE send me an email at jlcooley@gmail.com just as soon as you see this. PLEASE contact me.

Hello Freind,
I was finally diagnosed about amonth ago after 2 years dealing with increasing pain and symptoms. of course you and anyone reading this knows all to well what we deal with on any given day. My new neurosurgeon who was finally the one who gave us the diagnosis wants to put in a spinal cord stimulator, aka SCS . Any thoughts. I know that the general thought is no more surgery because any new insult can exacerbate the inflamation and scaring, however with my case. i am very young, only 27 and this would really only be the best time for me to try anything else. Just kinda getting ideas from others. Also should let you know i'm pretty well read on everything to do with Arach. amd have found several articles stating it as a general treatment option for the right patient selection. also any other treament you might have treid and worked for a while for the back and leg pain, please let me know. also just wanted to let you know about a support gruop with lots of people and tons of info... really is the most current i have found plus the most amount of people sharing combined info...it is "life with Arachnoiditis" on Facebook..give it a try , i would love to see you there and have your input on the discussion page/tab.. thanks-- jessikah

I am 25 years old, 6 months pregnant, and have had arachnoiditis since October 2008 (although the doctors assumed I had herniated discs...). I was finally diagnosed two days ago, although I can't really do anything about it until after my baby is born. My arachnoiditis was caused by an epidural steroid injection that I had back in September 2008. Sadly enough, my doctors recommended that I have a 2nd injection in December, which exacerbated my symptoms to an extreme. I'm obvioulsy scared and really confused...there is very litte information out there. Can you tell me a litte bit about the various "treatments" you've tried, like TENS therapy or just plain old physical therapy? I want to stay as positive as I can and hope that I will be able to take care of my baby once she's born. As of now, I'm unable to walk more than just a few steps, but am not taking any medicine at all. Help!!
