My Name, LPN… Go Ahead & Start Calling Me Nurse

I can see a light at the end of this long tunnel called Nursing School. In seven short months I will have finished my Associate’s Degree in Nursing. And in five days I will be eligible to sit for the Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) state boards. That is if I make it through the next five days…

We are at the end of our pediatric nursing rotation, which in my opinion has been the hardest 5 week rotation so far. It’s not that the content is difficult; it’s really just the schedule. You see, on top of peds lectures and peds clinical, we also have a “Leadership & Teamwork” course which includes its own lectures and clinical. Basically, we’re at school or clinical five days a week, and when we’re not at school we’re studying for it.

In total, this 5 week rotation has nine exams. I’ve made it through the first five so there’s only four more to go. The very last one is this Friday and it is a comprehensive exam for the entire program. I’ve been in nursing school for 17 months now…that’s a lot of info to recall! It’s a 200 question exam, we have 3 hours to take it, and we have to score in the top 95 percentile of the national average. Oh, and if we don’t, we can’t move on to the upper level courses.

I’m sure it sounds worse in my head than it actually will be. It’s intimidating, but I know that I wouldn’t have made it this far if I didn’t have the knowledge locked up somewhere in my head! So, after I pass Friday’s exam I’ll wait to hear from the state who will say that I’m eligible to sit for LPN state boards.

My plan is to take state boards, become an LPN, work at my current job as an LPN (an actual NURSE guys!!!), finish up the upper level courses this summer and fall, and then sit for Registered Nurse state boards in December! Wish me luck!

Look how far you've come. Someday you will look back and say, "Wow that wasn't so bad. Maybe I'll go for my masters." Hang in there. The light really is at the end of the tunnel.

Thanks! I actually am looking into an RN to MSN program. One day, I'd like to teach future nurses... We'll see. :-)

Congratulations!! Becoming a nurse is the best thing you will ever do, it is a great, flexible profession and will always serve you well.

As for nursing school, no one who hasn't been through it can appreciate how grueling it is! It is literally like boot camp. But it is worth it because you come out on the other side prepared for anything. Again, congratulations and lots of luck!! :)

Thank you so much for the kind words and encouragement! It's always nice to be reminded that this will all be worth it in the end.

I couldn't agree with you more about nursing school...there have been quite a few mornings that I've sat in my car in the driveway and asked myself "where am I supposed to go today?"

But ya know what? I wouldn't trade it for the world. I'm loving every minute of it and can't wait to see where it leads me.
