My Sister Is Melting Because She Won't Wear Shorts
By Mouthy Housewives on July 23, 2014
Dear Mouthy Housewives,
How can I get my sister to wear shorts? It's 100 degrees outside already this summer, and she insists on wearing jeans every day. She says she's more comfortable that way, but I know it's because she's embarrassed that she's not skinny. She feels that she looks bad when she shows her legs. I don't think she looks bad, and I want her to not be so hot and sticky. What can I do to help her?
My Sister Wears the Pants in This Family
Dear My Sister,
I'm going to tell you what I told my neighbor when she wanted to give her cats buzz cuts for the summer: Your intentions are good, but your intentions are also very, very, very misguided and you will probably have to be hospitalized after you get two thousand claw marks on your face.
Not that your sister will claw your face. How should I know, I haven't even seen her fingernails.
But the point is: nowhere in your letter did you say that your sister doesn't like wearing jeans in the summer. It's you who doesn't like it because it makes you uncomfortable. You want her to believe the whole "Every body is beautiful!" thing that we see on places like The Huffington Post every week, and that's a nice thing. Like I said, you have good intentions.
However, loving and owning one's body is a personal thing. So, in my opinion, wearing shorts or not is your sister's decision. If she can deal with hot denim casings on her legs, let her deal with it. What a person wears is 100% up to them (unless they work at McDonald's). But it's definitely not something you should bug someone else about. I know I certainly don't want my sister nagging me about my one-piece wool bathing costume that I wear to go boating. I mean, if I wanted to wear a bikini, I would, brother.
If your sister finally gets to the point where wearing jeans make her more uncomfortable than showing her legs in public does, then it's her choice to put on shorts. All of that said, there's nothing wrong with telling her she looks great or showing her your new shorts and SUBTLY saying how good they feel. Just don't go overboard because, as said above, it's a touchy subject. Especially when it's 100 degrees outside.
