My Spring Detox and Beauty Redux
By 40FitFab on March 10, 2014
I do a cleanse every year in the Spring to herald in a new season of eating lighter. But, this is not the only reason I do this. The Environmental Defence suggests we are exposed to over 80,000 chemicals in industry and consumer products, household cleaners, furniture and cosmetics. Yet, only a small percentage of these toxins have actually been tested for safety. Yikes! That’s why I supplement my diet with an herbal cleansing kit, like Renew Life’s CleanseSMART. This herbal cleanse helps move out accumulated toxins from the 7 channels of elimination (liver, colon, blood, lymphatic system, lungs, skin, and kidneys).
I mention in my book Fit & Fab Over 40 that removing toxins from your life, via cleansing and being more conscious of not only what you eat, but what you expose yourself to can help reduce hormone disrupting obesogens. The toxins that are contributing to stubborn weight gain for many of us.
I recently came across a very interesting article in The Wall Street Journal on the Debate Over Juice Cleanses and Toxin Removal. I found the article refreshing, since I have always shunned from a juice fast approach to detoxifying. For starters, many popular juice fast programs contain almost 100 grams of sugar per day (equivalent to 3 cans of Coke)! But, what was even more interesting is that Dr. Mark Hyman highlights 3 types of toxins – the SAD diet (Standard American Diet), environmental toxins like heavy metals and mercury, and lastly “spiritual” toxins.
This struck a nerve with me because my weight loss journey had me look at not only the external factors affecting my unexplainable weight gain, but I also explored spiritual healing, which I think together, with an herbal cleanse and eating real unprocessed foods really did help me not only shed weight; but to combat bad eating habits for good!
One area for improvement for me though, where toxin removal is concerned, is in my bathroom. I only recently started looking at my cosmetics and body products, and I am glad I have, as Dr. Hyman suggests that chemicals (including Bisphenol A in makeup and credit-card receipts) can disrupt the endocrine system (hormones). Furthermore, the Environmental Defence suggests the removal of the following ingredients from your beauty bag: formaldehyde, phthalates, and parabens.
It got me thinking about what I put on my face and body everyday, not to mention what I ingest fume-wise before I get out the door in the morning. So, this Spring, in addition to an herbal cleanse, and transitioning to a lighter diet, I will be scrutinizing my beauty products.
I started looking for organic or natural skin care that doesn’t contain phthalates or parabens, during a recent trip to Sephora. Here’s what I found:
1. Josie Maran Argan Cleansing Oil (Cleanser)
2. Josie Maran 100% Pure Argan Oil (Moisturizer)
3. Origins Clear Improvement Active Charcoal Mask
4. Dr. Dennis Gross Alpha Beta Peel
At first I thought I would be sacrificing efficacy, but I really do love love how smooth and supple my skin is, not to mention a lot more hydrated. Stay tuned for more toxin-removal ideas this year!
