I’m just sooooo disturbed and saddened by the contemporary colonialism that is happening in the USA and specifically at Morehouse right now.

and I think it’s horrible that they’re invoking the names of MLK and the other GREATS to say that bar has been set high blah blah blah…..I’m sorry but it all seems a bit house negro-ish…psst! don’t you get it? by going on national/international television and wagging your finger and chanting “court jester” (your words not mine), you’re STILL playing into the hands of the colonizers…

and um…actually?…it’s homophobic…I think at the VERY LEAST the school should muster up the cahones to say, yeah we’re homophobic, deal with it…if you’re going to be an ass at least claim it…don’t hide behind professionalism, and decorum…you don’t want your men dressing up like women? ok, you’re entitled to that right…but DONT say it’s in the name of professionalism and maintaining traditional standards…and DONT say that Black men have it hard enough in the world as it is, and all you’re doing is preparing your students to be prepared….prepared for what? …prepared for fitting into a white christian man’s world?…but um…isn’t that what MLK and the greats fought against?? helloooo?!? morehouse WAS around during the Black Power Movement wasn’t it??…

and the man in the video says that sagging pants and do rags make black men look like fools/court jesters…um….SUITS are a colonial construction…what we know as “professionalism” is deeply embedded oppression…so when you go on national television with your “monkey suit” (there’s that word again) and tie and low cut “appropriate” haircut, it’s actually YOU sir who is the fool…you’re the house negro that’s pro massa and his ways…this…is …SAD…and you should be ashamed…

a couple of bloggers have said that they don’t think men should dress like women or women should dress like men…um…what does it “mean” to dress like a man/woman??….you can’t tell me that the bible says xyz about “proper attire” bc I KNOW you don’t follow the bible word for word and I KNOW that you wouldn’t object to seeing a chick wear tight jeans and her boobs poppin’ out of her top….what’s that saying about not casting the first stone?

Can you imagine the uproar if they told Spelman women they could not dress like “men”?? no pants allowed… skirts and dresses only…long straight “feminine” hair or a decorative clip in short hair to identify yourself as a woman? cue the female greats like Toni Cade Bambara and Audre Lorde spinning in their graves…they might as well get rid of the  Comparative Women’s Studies Department all together.

I’m very very very irked by this….these backward steps are SERIOUSLY problematic…
