My Wakeup Call
By WakeUpGoldilocks on March 06, 2014
I remember it like it was yesterday. Oh wait. It was yesterday. The voice on the other end of the phone was telling me that I had been cast as a speaker in the NYC version of Listen To Your Mother, a national series of live readings in 32 series nationwide in celebration of Mother’s Day.
So how did I, a Westchester mother who works in the Financial District, end up getting the call? Let me, first, retrace my steps.
The first thing you should know is that I was sleeping. Not literally sleeping, but sleeping. That’s not to say I didn’t have an incredible life, an amazing husband and two perfect daughters. I did. But I was sleeping and I didn’t know it.
Then two things happened. First, I got diagnosed with Rheumatoid Arthritis and it turned my world upside down. An avid fitness enthusiast, I woke up one morning and couldn’t open my hands. Three weeks later, I was entering the world of rheumatologists, heavy duty toxic drugs, and suddenly relating to all the TV commercials that list the long list of medication side effects. It threw me for a loop. I became a shadow of my former self. What positive thing could I possibly gain from this?
Secondly, an aunt came into visit from California. A few of us went out to dinner and she asked all of us a simple question. Tell me about yourself and what you’ve been doing. I was the last one on the couch and regressed into a ten year old fearing that I would be the next one called on to speak. Could I disappear and say I have to pee? I didn’t want to talk about the RA. Who would want to hear about that? Should I talk about the kids? I could do that for hours. I realized the only thing I had been concentrating on for the last couple of years was my RA. My only joy was my family and friends and their lives. When it was my turn, I said, “Oh. I’m still a Vice President at the same firm, still love to exercise, still go to dinner”….my voice trailed off.
It was my same old story. I could have told the same story years before, but since my kids were young then, that’s all we talked about when someone dared to ask how we were. Now my kids are in their twenties and they are telling their own stories.
I decided right then and there to wake up from my same old story. I decided to finally follow my passions, finally chart my own course with my health, finally start writing, and finally put together the blog I had been talking about for years. I decided to finally do things I had never ever done before. Which brings me to how I ended up auditioning and getting cast in Listen To Your Mother. In my blog, I’ll tell you about how I took control of my health and began to follow my passion.
I got a wakeup call and I answered it. Life no longer had a storybook ending if I wasn’t writing the story. I’m here to share with you everything I now know about being motivated, being inspired, conquering, and the transformative power of truly believing in yourself. I’m not done. I have a long way to go. I’m only just beginning.
