Can We Talk About 'The Good Wife' Yet?

Please note, this post will contain spoilers. Big spoilers. Spoil. Alert. Further, it will talk about spoiler alerts and about participating on social media during television viewing. So this post contains a lot of spoiling. And alerting.  ...more

The One the Teacher Warns the Substitute About: I'm That Kid's Mom

By Misty Van Staaveren Back when I was teaching Kindergarten, about ten years ago, I had this adorable little boy in my class. He was very young emotionally and seemed to lack any control over himself. He couldn't keep quiet. He couldn't raise his hand before blurting something out. He couldn't sit in his seat. Instead he'd be mindlessly dancing around the chair while he worked. Every day, he would "move his card" because he had problems with behavior in class. None of it was terrible behavior, but it was disruptive nonetheless. ...more

An Addiction That No One Talks About: Candy Crush

I have avoided it for as long as I can. I feel like I have a duty to discuss an epidemic that is affecting moms all over this great country. There is a dirty little secret that no one wants you to know about. Especially all of the moms. People are probably going to be mad at me after this but it is time to shine some light on an addiction that has the potential to damage the family dynamic and possibly modern civilization as we know it now. That is right. I am talking about Candy Crush....more

Does Your Blog No Longer Fit You?

Except that I have realized lately that I seem to be telling a very different story from the one that I started to tell almost three years ago. Back then the story was about getting remarried and lots and lots of parenting. Principessa this, Principessa that. A little fitness thrown in here and there, but mostly, mom-mommy-parenting stuff. Which of course is not what I am writing about anymore. Or at least, not primarily. Which begs the Ciao Mom even the appropriate name of this space? ...more

Do You Really Hate Cable/Satellite Enough to Cut the Cord?

The cable-guy service windows, the shoddy satellite reception with a slight westerly breeze, the 107-minute hold times. Ah, cable television. You've been screwing the American people since the eighties. But your reign of terror just might be over. If you love TV but hate cable and satellite, you need to read this....more

Can You Keep a Blog a Secret?

I still remember how I felt the first time a real-life-first friend commented on my blog. I have no idea what she wrote in her comment, but I know that when I saw her name and personal reflections on my words, I felt unexpectedly uncomfortable. ...more

Oh Just Screw You Glee

Dear Glee:  I go back and forth with you. I love you, I hate you, but I watch you. Every week I watch. Perhaps it’s that I myself was a bit of a choir geek in high school so I can relate to feeling like an outsider and to the stress of regionals.  Of course we never got to belt out any Cee Lo, but Come Sail Away was a big hit thank you very much. Choir was a way of life for me as it is for the Gleeks. Thankfully no one tossed Slushee’s in our faces but still…prom queen I was not....more

For People Who Know Me Who Read My Blog

I Forgave the Doctors for Being Right

I was diagnosed with Hodgkin's disease at the ripe age of 23. I forgave God for allowing me to get sick. At 24 I recurred.  My body betrayed me yet again with complications. Pneumonia, fluid in the sac around my heart, a blood clot...the days were long and the challenges many. I forgave my body for failing me again. My doctor's decided I needed a bone marrow transplant. My fiance' decided he'd had enough. ...more

I'm so bad at forgiveness at this post is a powerful reminder as to why it is important.
