Blogger Beware: You CAN Get Sued For Using Photos You Don't Own on Your Blog

One of the things I learned early on was that a post with a photo always looked nicer than one with just text. So I looked at what other people were doing for pictures.  And mostly it seemed that everyone was grabbing pics from Google Images and pasting them on their sites. Sometimes with attribution, most of the time without. And when I asked others (or looked at disclaimers on websites and Tumblrs), it seemed that everyone agreed using pics that way was okay under Fair Use standards. ...more
This also happened to me, I used Google Images to find a photo of a waiting room to use on a ... more

Two Stories of Little Girl Lost

On a warm June day in Paris, in a little park adjacent to the Musée de L’Orangerie, I started to cry. There was a little girl nearby, with dark curly hair and white shoes, and a pale pink hat with a wide brim. Her parents sat on a bench watching her as she toddled away into the grass, looking back at them every few moments to make sure they were still there. She was a stark reminder of the little girl I never had a chance to raise, whose chaotic flutters inside my 13-year-old belly were the beginning and end of our communication....more

Change Up Your Breakfast With Not-So-Sweet Oatmeal

When I was a kid, oatmeal meant one of two things: Either homemade oatmeal that I doctored with as much brown sugar and as many raisins as it would bear, or envelopes of instant Quaker Oatmeal from the assorted flavor pack, which I mixed before school. Regardless, the oatmeal I ate was always flavored sweetly, whether I used brown sugar, maple syrup, or, in the case of the Quaker packets, just straight up regular sugar with artificial flavoring. ...more

The Obesity Lies

While at the library the other day, I was browsing through the self-help books.  I flipped through a worn-out, oversized paperback and came across a chapter about abusive relationships.  I was going to continue flipping past that chapter because I thought it didn’t pertain to me, but the first paragraph grabbed my attention and really stuck with me long after I put the book back onto the shelf.  It was about abusive relationships.  The chapter wasn’t about the physical abuser, but the emotional abuser....more

Baby Needs What?!

My husband and I spent the good part of Sunday afternoon “registering” for the baby yesterday.I guess you could have looked at the fact that we couldn’t even FIND the registry desk as some sort of omen that we were two clueless first-time parents, but a nice Babies ‘R’ Us employee pointed out the massive sign that said “Register Here,” and my husband and I were ready to start scanning....more
