How to Write (Better): How to Make Your Words Carry More Authority

Writing about writing with authority is really hard. Because that insinuates that I know what I'm talking about, and you might all be sitting back, slurping your coffee and thinking you know, that Rita is pretty full of herself. And therein lies the rub. ...more

Do you use your "voice" on Twitter and Facebook?

I can think of a few bloggers who have definitely created an online persona. They are always in character, whether it's on their blog, in comments on other people's blogs or on Twitter and Facebook. Then there are people like me. I never know if I'm going to start a post as though it's a short story about my real life or as though I'm pulling down the fourth wall and talking to the Internet Ferris-style. I push Twitter to Facebook and rarely initiate anything on Facebook, and my tweet style ranges from professional to very casual.

Short Stories: Enter Writing Contests or Self Publish?

Over the weekend I was chatting with Erin Kotecki Vest about my latest short story. I told her I was considering entering it in a writing contest, but I thought the $15 reading fee was steep. I could almost hear her laughing. She said, "You're a blogger. You publish it."

Why You Write

Why You Write I'm new to the group. Just wanted to share what writing does for me and why I love it. I have a post titled "Following My Bliss" on http://justdoingmythingcom.blogspot.com/. Specifically: http://justdoingmythingcom.blogspot.com/search/label/Writer%27s%20Life

Blogging and memoir--is there synergy?

I'm about to start reading Elizabeth Gilbert's second best selling memoir: Committed. It is hot on the heels of Eat, Pray, Love. Two memoirs on the best seller list from the same author is amazing, I think. I'm wondering if the popularity of personal blogging has anything to do with our appetite for the memoir. Have we developed more of an appetite for personal stories because of blogging, and is this giving Elizabeth Gilbert a little push toward the best seller list?

No Kids: What Am I Missing?

Since Sassymonkey sent a link yesterday morning to a post called "Child-free movement: You say 'childfree,' I say 'childless'" by Kim Hays of the Orlando Sentinel Moms at Work blog, I've been trying to figure out why it bothered me to the point that I felt the need to call the author out on Twitter. (I am allergic to conflict and am therefore so not a Twitter caller-oute ...more

Blanket and Beyond: What's Your Nickname?

My given name is Laurie (rhymes with "sorry", technically) to most people, much to the horror of the priest who baptized me and my third grade teacher Sister Patricia because although I was not named after a Partridge Family character it's still not a saint's name so basically to them I was Laurence. It's "Yo" and "hey" and increasingly, horribly, "Ma'am" to many more. Some people in a far off land I occasionally inhabit call me "Professor," that is when they're not calling me "Yo." Go ahead. Laugh. I do. ...more
