Our 9/11 Stories: Share Your Posts About September 11, 2001

Editor's note: Last year, we called for you to share your posts on the events of September 11, 2001. More than 200 bloggers responded. We're honoring this tradition again this year, and invite you to read these bloggers' stories and contribute your own. -- Julie We've seen a LOT of stories in the media about the 9/11 attacks on the World Trade Center, the Pentagon and United Flight 93. We've also seen, and maybe felt, that many of us are sick of the story in the media. ...more

6 Ways You Can Avoid Gender Stereotypes of Your Kids

Kids, new research is telling us, pick up very early on what sort of behavior is appropriate for girls and boys. Even before they learn to talk, they’ve absorbed multiple messages about the role of the sexes. Young kids start out with a wide-ranging curiosity, and learn all sorts of things from the world around them. But as this period closes, kids enter the culture created by adults, a culture that guides them into areas the adults think appropriate. ...more

Why Moms Don't Shower

I’m a stay-at-home-mom. Yes, I work from home as well, but my primary duties are to my little monster boy. He’s 2-and-a-half. I have been known to go one, two, three even four days without showering. Yea, yea, gag, gross, whatever. But let me tell you the story of today and then see which you gag more at -- me not showering for days or the aftermath of one 15 minute shower....more
This is hilarious. I can totally relate - although I never walked out of the shower to find ... more

In Defense of Alicia Silverstone's Feeding Methods

Today's rant is about the video that circulating around about Alicia Silverstone feeding food to her son directly from her mouth. The general consensus out there from the media reports that I've read -- as well as comments from people in my twitter timeline -- is that she's insane and that feeding your child that way is gross. *BIG SIGH* Might I remind people that before blenders and jarred baby food, and most certainly back in the day and back home, mothers for generations upon generations, back to the dawn of man have been feeding their babies with pre-chewed food. ...more

I Believe: A Chance Encounter with Santa

Dear Santa, I don’t know what other name to call you, so I hope it’s OK if I stick with that one. I just wanted to tell you how wonderful it was to see you at our local restaurant last night. Such a nice surprise! When I saw my daughter (Anna, as you know) smiling in shy recognition at someone across the room, I expected to turn around to see her teacher or one of her classmates. But instead I saw you, in all your white-bearded, spectacled glory, enjoying a quiet meal with Mrs. Claus. In a Harley T-shirt and jeans. No matter…the kids didn’t need to see your red suit or reindeer companions to know it was you....more

When It Doesn't Get Better: More Bullying, Another Suicide

Jamey Rodemyer loved Lady Gaga. He was a high school freshman, just 14 years old. He believed that it would get better -- it meaning his life and the bullying he experienced both before and after he came out as bisexual. On Monday morning, Jamey was found dead of an apparent suicide, one more in a rash of unnecessary deaths caused by the hatred and intolerance of others. My heart breaks for his parents, for those who loved him....more

Life After Divorce: The Summer Custody Visit Suck

One more sleep. One more morning coffee. That’s how long until I get to see my baby girl again. She’s six years old and she has been away from home for more than two weeks now, visiting my ex-husband in St. Louis. All I know is that two weeks is way too long for a mommy and a little girl to be apart. At least it is for me. ...more
