How Not to Win Friends and Influence People in Email

Let me preface this post by saying that I love email. I really do. I love having the freedom to compose my words carefully and strategically. I like having a paper trail that I can reference when needed. Plus, I hate getting caught off guard and stuttering a lame comeback instead of presenting a polished, intelligent response. Because despite the fact that I'm actually a spokesperson and have spoken at many events and conferences, I admit it....more

Yes, Broccoli Stems Are Edible!

[Editor's Note: I remember the first time I heard you could eat more than just the florets at the top of broccoli. My mother was talking to one of her friends, another wife of a Foreign Service Officer, and the friend was telling her about how she used to try to throw away broccoli stems when her husband was posted to China, but their housekeeper kept taking them from her with the admonition that she was throwing away the best part of the vegetable! From the day we heard that story on, broccoli stems became a regular part of our side dishes at my house. Read on to learn more from Two Lazy Gourmets, and get a great recipe for an amazing broccoli side dish! --Genie] ...more

Fleur de Sel and Bourbon Spice Caramels

I'm not trying to fool you. I know you've seen me make caramel before, and in step-by-step detail. But not with bourbon and Fall spices. For wedding dessert bar purposes, I kept up appearances by making about 400 of my standard fleur de sel caramels. I had to, or there might have been an Occupy Dessert Bar movement. Seriously. People get passionate over burnt sugar with salt, at least in my family....more

Marriage Contracts: Should We Should Have Marital Term Limits?

Last year marked my ten-year wedding anniversary. I love the legal protections of marriage -- no one argues that my husband can't visit me in the hospital or shouldn't be able to pick something up for me or inherit my money. I love the psychological aspect of marriage, too -- but it's the LEGAL aspect of marriage that ups the ante societally from living together. The legal aspect is also the part that I think we should change: We should have marital term limits. ...more

Is Having Too Many Books a Problem?

Stefanie is doing some home renovations and it's making her take a good hard look at her book stash. I feel her pain. Despite being someone who has moved a lot in the last ten years (and should know better) I have an astonishing ability to acquire more books than I really have room for. I've mostly stopping acquiring them. Temporarily. Until I clear out a few of the piles. That is unless you count e-books.... ...more

Meal Plan Monday August 15 - Two! Two! Two Weeks In One!

I've been feeling rather uninspired lately. This summer has been a lot of travel for us. I've travelled more than I think I ever have and the fake husband has travelled even more often. Meal planning seemed like such a pain in the butt when we're not here for half a week or when it's just me. I just haven't wanted to cook. We've had a lot of days where we just pull some meat out of the freezer (or run to the store to buy some if we forget to take it out) to throw on the grill and then pairing it up with either a salad or throwing some veggies on the grill with it.
