Do You Trust Your Teen Alone with Members of the Opposite Sex?

What would you do if your child asks if he/she could spend a few hours at a friend's house without any adult supervision? Would it matter if the child he/she was hanging out with was of the opposite sex? As a mom of a 15-year-old daughter, I have had no problems over the years of letting my child spend time with her friends, boys and girls, so long as I knew the parents and if a parent was present while my daughter was with their child. ...more

Do You Feel Safe as a Woman Riding Mass Transit?

Do you consider yourself safe when you ride mass transit? A recent article in The Atlantic indicates how women's safety in public transit may have more to do with financial access than the the hour a person waits for a ride home. Iranian Women Fight Back, Parkour-Style

Until recently, I had never heard of parkour (gymnastics+martial arts). I inadvertently heard the term while watching an episode of New Girl when one of the characters shouted out, "Parkour!" as he tried to scale the wall of his apartment. While I let the term slip by then, it means more to me now, after reading how parkour has made an impact for women in Iran...more

Nanny Arrested in NYC Murders: Surround This Mom Blogger with Love

There are certain things in this life that I simply never want to understand. Here are a few: What life feels like to live without your children. The bone-crushing guilt that must accompany any decision that led to your children being harmed -- no matter that your choices were rational, the best any mother could do. The ridicule, finger-pointing, and judgment of complete strangers when your family tragedy becomes national news. Knowing that Marina Krim, a mother in New York City whose two children were allegedly murdered by their nanny, is dealing with all of those feelings -- and more -- makes my heart break. But I have hope....more

BlogHer '12 Interviews: Why Did You Start Blogging?

As we continue to speed toward BlogHer '12 in New York City this early August, I wanted to ask a question I ask almost every blogger I meet -- whether at a conference or a meetup or a one-on-one or eventually by individual email. It's the question that, really, leads us all to BlogHer.com and the annual conference in the first place: Why did you start blogging? Why do you keep blogging?...more

Weight Gain Mandatory For Israeli Models? What A Concept!

In light of the recent Ashley Judd article regarding body image, I thought it would be interesting to write about body image as it relates to the modeling industry and how it has affected the lives of young girls and how they perceive themselves because of it. Growing up in a country where being thin was considered the norm and anything more was subject to criticism, I would not realize the impact of this perception until I had a daughter myself.  ...more
