Domestic Violence: I Called the Cops. Where Were My Neighbors?

So I became a cop caller. That might sound strange to you. Maybe 90% of you reading would have called the cops at the first scream. Somehow, I could not. I thought she might listen and come in with us, while if we called the police, they would both be long gone. I have some measure of distrust for the police, as well, from past experience. Would they come? Would they care or dismiss it as a domestic dispute? Would calling them only put her at more risk -- once they got home? It was a dramatic escalation. Talking with them was working at first. You just want to say … man, really you don't want to go to jail! Please! ...more

Was Ines Sainz Harassed by The New York Jets?

When Ines Sainz went to New York to interview the quarterback for the Jets she got more of a story than she bargained for. Sainz complained that one of the assistant coaches seemed to be throwing balls at her on the sidelines, and once she went into the locker room, several Jets player made inappropriate comments towards her. Clearly this is wrong, right? The poor innocent sports journalist was just minding her own business trying to get an interview, right? ...more

Dear Dancing With the Stars: We're Over

I didn't want it to end. I loved spending my Monday and Tuesday evenings with you. I set my DVR just in case of an emergency where I had to be away, because I never wanted to miss an episode. I was one of your true, loyal fans. I voted every week. I encouraged my friends to do so too. I tweeted and posted on Facebook my anticipation for another season. I blogged about you, my guilty pleasure. I was not a casual admirer. I even went so far as to drive to New Jersey to the Prudential Center and see the show when it went on tour! I've missed you so, all summer long. But now it's over. Done. I know we can't go on. ...more

Say No To Singles

My vision of a plastic-free, zero-waste world is not a singles club. No, I'm not discriminating against uncoupled people. But I am a bigot when it comes to the three categories of single-use products, all of which have been featured on the new Facebook Plastic Crap Wall of Shame lately, another kind of club where fans can upload links and photos of the worst, unnecessary plastic they can find. The Wall is a place to vent and also a way to create awareness of the problem of plastic waste. ...more
