You Are More Beautiful Than You Think

There’s a TV spot for a beauty brand where women describe themselves to a forensic sketch artist. At first their self-portraits are dowdy, and sad music plays. Then, complete strangers describe the same women to the artist, and the music lifts. Gorgeous new portraits materialize, and the women pat their faces in disbelief. "You are more beautiful than you think," the tagline reads. If I could, I’d stamp another tagline over the ending: "NOW GET ON WITH YOUR LIFE."...more

Dangerous Names

So I kind of have baby on the brain lately. I think I probably made my husband stop breathing with that statement, but mostly it is just because I have quite a few friends who are pregnant right now. 8 Qualities Every Woman Should Look For in Her Dream Man

A lot of girls grow up dreaming about Mr. Right. He goes by many names – Mr. Perfect, Prince Charming, The One – but in essence, he’s a compilation of the ideal job, physique, and personality, as perceived by each individual girl. The problem is that our notions of the perfect prototype often hold us back from finding a true connection, since no real man can live up to those impossible standards. As we grow up, we realize that the qualities we previously overlooked are the ones that really matter....more

Break the Blogging Rules

It showed up as a meme on various blogs: writing advice by Elmore Leonard. Writing advice tends to pop up on blogs, the artistic medium of choice for those who like to play with words. I am drawn to these lists like spiders seeking warm rooms in winter.  Who knows when someone will discover the magic key that unlocks novels, or figure out a way to make a positive post (that does not contain baby animals) go viral every single time?  But so far, I've left every single list of Blogging Dos and Don't or Ten Best Writing Tips with the same thought: Break the rules. ...more

Bob Dylan: Soundtrack of My Lifetime

Some of my earliest childhood memories were set to the soundtrack of the crack and pop of vinyl on the record player in my parent's living room. There were tapes too, but our household was one of records. Played loudly through the speakers that seemed so huge, they might as well have been suspended from the ceiling of Madison Square Garden. Dancing, singing, spinning in circles in the living room to the music that was so infused in my blood from such a young age that it seemed like part of me. Part of my family....more
