Simple Rules That Helped Us Survive 24 Years of Marriage

This was a big weekend for my husband and me.We celebrated our birthdays back-to-back, took a day off, and then celebrated our 24th anniversary. We've been together for more than half of our lives now, which is pretty amazing considering we married quite young-- in our early, early twenties, because we were sure we were ready....more

Poetry, like Postcards

I am back to reading Mary Oliver’s Blue Horses this morning. I didn’t finish, again. I felt like I was reading poems like I eat fine chocolates–with relish and excitement, lips smacking with understanding and delight, and then, having to push myself away, lest I stop enjoying the distinctness of each one.But here is just a teensy part of “If I Wanted a Boat”:...more

The Lifecycle of a Blogger

1. Why not become a blogger, right? Why not?! I have stories to tell. I have opinions. I have important things to tell the world. I know I’m not going to become the next Dooce or anything (but maybe I’ll be the next Amalah?). This is going to be good. I’ll start with a 2500-word introduction to my life story, just the self-involved parts. ...more

What I Learned About Blogging When I Quit Blogging

At the end of October, I took a three-month sabbatical from my blog to pursue some other writing interests. I approached the break with some excitement and a lot of trepidation. I worried at the time that I was making a terrible mistake, but I've come to decide it was one of the best things I've ever done -- not because there was anything wrong with my blog, but because stepping away from it was an act of courage. I didn't have any great epiphanies during those 90 days, but the separation from the blog gave me the distance I needed to get a few things into perspective. ...more
