To Whom It May Concern: You're Stealing My Work

Well, it's been a busy week at A Cook and Her Books headquarters, setting the blogging and business worlds straight on acceptable uses of my pictures. It all began with my weekend rant on the unauthorized use of my photographs that were copied from A Cook and Her Books and posted without acknowledgment on business websites and other blogs. ...more

What Not to Give at a Baby Shower: Useless Gifts You'll Be Better Off Without

My son is now 3, and my daughter is almost 9 months. I have a pretty good idea of gifts that are useful, and those that...aren't. Here are the ones I wouldn't register for or buy for an expecting mother: 1. Onesies: Why are there so many of these on the market? And why does everyone give them to you in mass quantities when you're pregnant? It's awful to squeeze a squirming baby's head into that tiny little neck hole. Babies cry enough already. Don't give them another reason to do so....more

I Don't Work for Yahoo! Why Do I Care About Marissa Mayer's Policy?

I always know news has hit the mainstream when my mother asks me about it. Yesterday, she called me to ask how I felt about Yahoo! CEO Marissa Mayer's decision to ban telecommuting by June 2013, even for those who were hired in a city that doesn't have a Yahoo! office. The truth? I feel super invested in this policy -- something that doesn't affect my life at all -- and it's taken me a few days to figure out why....more

Why Do Well-Child Visits Make Me Feel Like a Bad Mom?

I dread well-check appointments. It’s not that anything is wrong with my kids, but those darn visits make me feel like an inadequate mother. But this year, I was prepared. The American Academy of Pediatrics has a list of questions that my doctor uses to judge the overall health and well-being of a child. They are good questions. Based on solid evidence of what’s harmful to kids. I’m all over it. No, I don’t keep a loaded gun around. No, I don’t feed my kids fast-food burgers three times a week. No, my kids don't watch hours of television. I’m really quite an all-star. Did you see that one answer I jotted down about the excellent reading skills and vocabulary? I hand the form over to the bubbly little nurse. Here ya go! Here’s to high percentiles and healthy habits!...more

Using Candid Photos to Document a Day in Your Life
