Giving Thanks for Chocolate

If I see one more Hershey/Rescees/M+M's/piece of chocolate, I will scream!! Enough with the Halloween chocolate! Down with the Thanksgiving chocolate!!  Do you dress up, or go more casual? I'm more casual, especially after sitting out all morning cheering on the local football team in the fuh-reezing cold! But for sure I'll be slathered in chocolate-ly Thanksgiving goodness....more
Isn't chocolate brown great? it can be a so much more forgiving tone than a harsh black! more

The Great Artwork Dilemma: Keep Everything Your Kids Do?

At some point after I had my first child, on a visit back to my hometown, my mother offered me my baby book. It was carefully filled out for the entire first year, plus had various school pictures and papers tucked inside it. And then there was a small stack of other childhood detritus -- a few report cards, newspaper clippings where I was mentioned for some school thing or other, and one drawing I'd done in kindergarten. Just one. ...more

Learning to Love the Gap Between My Teeth

It was so startling to see my teeth when she handed me the small mirror and asked me to inspect her handiwork. She told me at least twelve times how gorgeous my teeth looked, but something was off kilter when I looked back at myself. I did look more conventional -- more like everyone else with nice white square straight teeth -- but something was gone and it just wasn't the negative space between the teeth. ...more

Run, Rock, 'n Roll

Am I running away from turning 50?  Or, am I running toward 50 with my arms open wide?  It's a little too early to tell, but today, I registered for the San Antonio Rock 'n Roll 1/2 Marathon.  I only signed up for the 1/2 marathon because I figure if I really like running ridiculously long distances, I can always switch to the full marathon, but I don't have to commit to that just yet.  ...more

Would You Let Your Six-Year-Old Walk Home Alone?

Each time she has asked me this question (every day, for the past 14 days, multiple times each day OMG) my answer has been, "no." And her response has always been, "but why not?" And my response is always, "because you're too young." And her response has always been, "but I know that I need to stay on the side of the road and watch for cars and not to get in a stranger's car!" ...more

Gobble Gobble: Time for a Thanksgiving Craft Round-Up!

Thanksgiving must be near. My sons have been bringing home turkey craft after turkey craft after really cute turkey craft for the past two weeks. Our refrigerator is covered with various shapes and sizes and colors of gobblers. I almost don't need to plan any crafts for us to do at home, except that even with my craft-fail-slash-aversion, I think turkey crafts are easy, fun and cute. Plus, teaching my kids to be thankful is of the utmost importance. So bring on the Thanksgiving crafts! ...more
