I Did Nothing While She Hurled Abuses At Them

I imagined her saying I don't need your help. Truth be told, I didn't have anything to help her with other than maybe talking to her kids while she zoned out for a while. My daughter and I got on the bus, our first day of catching it together. Our first day of her getting off and transferring to another to go to school; me staying on to get on the subway, me staying on to watch her walk to a bus stop that leaves a lot to be desired as far as safety. Please pay attention to your surroundings. Please. ...more

I'm Sick of Apologizing for My C-section

Did you know that April is Cesarean Awareness month? I didn’t. I didn’t even know such a thing existed. A little over two years ago I had a scheduled C-section. When I found out that my primary method of delivering Els was by C-section I was upset. I cried and felt like a failure. My body in my eyes was failing me and a C-section was the worst thing possible. I was naive and stupid for thinking that way. Now over two years later I blame the media and birth propaganda for making me feel like a failure and taking away some of the excitement of Els’ birth. ...more

No, I Won't Helicopter Parent My Teen's Love Life!

They are almost 17 -- and I suggest we stay out of it. This is the comment I made to a friend and mom of my daughter's boyfriend when she called me this weekend under the guise of a real estate question that really morphed in to a "is my son going out with your daughter, again?" question....more

Proposal: A Reality Competition Show for Bloggers

I feel I should start by stating that I am not a fan of reality TV. Well, except So You Think You Can Dance because I LOVE watching the dancers. I would love to be a dancer - they are so strong and graceful and beautiful. I love how they can tell a story with their movements. But I will never be a dancer. Not of their caliber anyway. I am too old and it would take years for me to get in that kind of physical shape. So that ship sailed long (long!) ago....more

In the Face of Change, I Still Sent Her to School

She was so incredibly excited to start preschool that morning. With a brother four years older, she already understood what school entailed. 9/11. And even though we Californians woke that morning to the crazy news that our nation was under attack, I felt the need to go on with this big day for my daughter. To move forward not as if nothing had happened, but as if what happened could never change our lives....more
Wow. I'm not sure I would have done the same - I was dumb and panicky - but I understand why you ... more
