No, I'm Not "Okay". I'm Going Through A Divorce!

I walked into Starbucks this morning to grab breakfast before heading to a therapy appointment and ran into a friend of mine from the homeschool co-op I used to belong to. I was happy to see her, and she offered a hug, which I gladly accepted. She then looked meaningfully at me and said, “So how are you? Are you and ex still separated?”...more

"I Can't Do My Homework Because We Have Termites," and Other Lies My Son Told

So then…I open an email from Tucker’s 6th grade teacher that says: “Dear Mrs. Perdu: Tucker did not have his homework today; he told me this was because there was a termite infestation at home. I told him he needed to ask you to write a note explaining the situation, but he said that his family did not believe in writing notes. However, since our homework policy is not to accept late work, I would appreciate a note or an e-mail when unusual situations occur so that Tucker can receive full credit....more

I Went to Pick My Son Up at School and Found Police Cars

On Wednesdays, my first-grader gets out of school at 1:05. Yesterday, I showed up at the school around 1:00 and was puzzled to see several police cars, lights flashing, parked around school grounds. I was just in time to overhear an announcement on the loudspeaker, "Students who usually walk home will be permitted to walk home as usual," or something to that effect. "Why wouldn't they be?" I said to myself. Obviously, something was Not Right at the school, but I had no idea what was going on....more

When Mom Wants to Run Away

Today is one of those days where I want to run away. I woke up this morning with a cloud just hanging over my head and feeling defeated by life. For as long as I can remember I've struggled with finding my identity and feeling claustrophobic with the world around me. As early as 10-years-old, I remember feeling worn out from so many moves and struggling to make friends, that I'd decided that running away to California to become a famous actress would solve all my problems....more

Do You Return to See if Your Comment Was Answered?

You leave a comment, perhaps even asking a question or making a point that you know would be volleyed back if you were in a face-to-face conversation, and sometimes the blogger picks up the thread and answers you back to continue the exchange of thoughts and sometimes they don't depending on technical limitations, time, or connection.  But the question is: do you return to the comment section to see if it was answered there? ...more

"The Chaperone" Chapters 17-21: So Much Good to Come

I think that the final chapters of Laura Moriarty's The Chaperone might be my favorite. It's the point where we see Cora decide to be the person we've caught glimpses of throughout the earlier chapters. We get to see Cora chuck propriety to the side and grab at happiness with both hands. Alas, if only the same could be said for Louise. ...more

Blogger Beware: You CAN Get Sued For Using Photos You Don't Own on Your Blog

One of the things I learned early on was that a post with a photo always looked nicer than one with just text. So I looked at what other people were doing for pictures.  And mostly it seemed that everyone was grabbing pics from Google Images and pasting them on their sites. Sometimes with attribution, most of the time without. And when I asked others (or looked at disclaimers on websites and Tumblrs), it seemed that everyone agreed using pics that way was okay under Fair Use standards. ...more
