Embarrassed to Blog?

I've discovered something interesting about myself since I started blogging back in December.  It embarrasses me.  I don't want everyday people knowing about it.  How weird is that? ...more

Getting Started With My Own Business

Susan RawlingsTwitter: @susansboutiqueEmail: boutiquesearchmarketing@gmail.com  As I begin my small business venture AND adventure, I have lots of questions for my fellow entrepreneurs.  How do you measure success?  How long did it take for you to feel as though you were making a worthwhile investment with your time, energies and talents? Just looking for a virtual "measuring cup" of sorts, if you will! Would love to hear your stories!   Susan  ...more

Bad Feminist Confessions: “I Just Wish I Could Be Thin.”

Despite what I’ve written about how the beauty ideal harms people (especially young women), I find it a lot easier to not judge others by the way they look than to avoid judging myself. Since I don’t admit on my blog that I, too, get bothered by weight gain or that I feel guilty when I don’t exercise, it’s no wonder that other people get the impression I have “great self-confidence.” Don’t get me wrong -- I do think my body image is better than it’s ever been before in my life and I’ve never been less fixated on my appearance. Still, that doesn’t mean I don’t also have plenty of days when I wake up feeling … well, fat. ...more

Don't Say You're Sorry. Just Own It.

Women are emotional beings. We feel a lot of things: passion, ambition, desire, desire to be desired. But I’ve noticed that more than anything, we just seem to feel guilty. Guilty for being passionate. Guilty for being ambitious. Guilty for wanting more. Guilty for wanting to be wanted. I used to feel guilty too. Until I owned it. ...more

What's Not to Love About Google's New Recipe Search? Plenty.

Whether you’re a food blogger who publishes recipes or you’re trying to find a great mac and cheese recipe for dinner, you just might not love Google’s new Recipe View. I don’t love it. Now, I’m neither a programmer, nor a webmaster, nor an expert. I’m a magazine food writer turned part-time blogger five years ago. I have two food blogs, a decent page rank on the more established blog, and a published archive of more than 800 recipes -- not one of which you’ll be able to find with Google’s new recipe search feature. ...more

Please Don't Call Me... Maybe

I've been going on for the past few years to anyone who will listen about how much I hate the telephone. Just last week, a blog friend I'd never met and with whom I needed to communicate about something important said something like, "You're not one of those phone haters, are you? Because I attract all of you." And I had to tell her she was right. ...more

The Great Unsubscribe of 2010

My inbox overflowed. Every single day. Emails. Emails. Insane amounts of emails. My inbox was crazy. All of my inboxes were packed. I have 7 inboxes that I actively use, and all of them were crazy, with my primary account being the craziest of all. And were these emails from friends, family, business contacts? No. These emails were from marketers trying to sell me things. And it was all my own fault. ...more
