In Defense of the 'Unladylike' Christian Woman

A few months ago I wrote a couple of blogs about men, women, sex, marriage, masturbation, infidelity and Christianity. They were widely read, my blog stats were happy to report. I received some great feedback, too. And a half-joking guarantee I’d never be invited to speak in church in any of the southernmost states of the U.S.A. And that’s quite okay. And then, there was this - emailed directly to me, not left as a comment on the blog:Dear Jo,...more

I Cried Today at Work

I cried today at work. On two different people. In many companies, that's pretty much career suicide. Yelling at people? Not great, not a dealbreaker. Crying on people? Better to throw up on them. But both crying and yelling show a loss of control, so what's the big deal with crying at work? ...more

She Finally "Saw" the Homeless

I watched as Puff walked the few steps to the homeless man. She shyly placed the dollar in the baseball cap. Before Puff could sneak away the man uttered, "Thank you honey." Puff smiled, ever so slightly, and walked back to me. It was obvious those few moments with the homeless man had affected her....more

How to Prepare for Homelessness

I'm no stranger to homelessness. As I went about making arrangements to be homeless, I realized that there were a number of things that could be done to minimize the impact of homelessness and make it more likely to be a temporary rather than chronic situation. For some, homelessness becomes a trap. I wasn't about to let it become a trap for me and my family. ...more

Justice Thomas' Wife Asks Anita Hill for an Apology; She Should Ask Her Husband

In an October 9 column for Slate, Dahlia Lithwick explained that historically, it's been very hard to be the wife of a Supreme Court justice. According to Lithwick, earlier generations of women, subjected to the forced anonymity traditionally expected of Justices' spouses, have been driven to drink, illness and despair. Some feel that explains why the wife of Supreme Court Associate Justice Clarence Thomas felt compelled to leave a voicemail message on the office telephone of Anita Hill, the law professor who accused him of sexual harassment during his 1991 confirmation hearing. According to the New York Times, who said Hill played the recording for them, Virginia "Ginni" Thomas said that through prayer, Hill might be led to offer an explanation and apology "for what you did with my husband." ...more

Whitney Houston's Come Back. Have You?

Whitney Houston, Mickey Rourke, Jennifer Hudson, Mackenzie Phillips: What comes to mind when you hear these celebrities names? I know the one I hear. It's "comeback." When Jennifer Hudson sang at the Super Bowl at the beginning of this year, the media went wild with Hudson comes back headlines, and they should have.
