What to Do with Wild Bunnies

Eastern cottontails are a frequent sight as they sprint across lawns in the spring. My mom and dad's grassy yard is hopping with bunnies. One mama bunny loved their yard so much that she decided to have her babies beside the front porch. We discovered the nest on Easter when their 100 pound German shepherd gingerly snagged a screaming baby in her mouth. The rabbit's scream echoed in my head from my past life as a wildlife rehabilitator. I yelled at the dog. She dropped it, and I picked up the pinkish, short-haired screaming neonate....more

Do You Have the Cure for the Christmas Blahs?

*sigh* What on earth is wrong with me this year? I cannot get myself into the "Christmas spirit" (whatever that really means)! I started out well enough, getting our Christmas tree up the week after Thanksgiving, a perfectly respectable date for that activity. I decorated the rest of the house, even did some Christmas shopping with my friend that week, though most of the presents for my boys have been picked up over the past few months. We went to see Santa, saw a Christmas parade. But now that we're in Crunch Time (six until Christmas, people!), I just don't feel Christmasy!...more

The Gross, Disgusting, Icky Trouble with Fall

Fall is absolutely my favorite season. I love the crisp air, the sights and smells, the anticipation of the holidays to come, the feeling that new things are coming. Ahhh, I love it. There's nothing better than sitting down with something pumpkin-flavored or enjoying something that smells or tastes like apples, whether you're watching your kids play outside or at a local high school football game. That being said, I do have one gripe with fall....more

A Letter to Future Me: Remember How Much You Loved Them

Dear Me 20 Years From Now, I wonder if you've become one of those women who briefly lingers around, a safe distance behind, young moms carting their babies and toddlers through the grocery store with that far-off look in your eyes. If you gently smile at the mom when she looks up and catches your glance, obviously frazzled by how challenging taking 2 kids grocery shopping is, as if to tell her it's going to be okay. If you look at her and miss that time, want so badly to trade 5 minutes of the independence you have now that your kids are much older so that you can rest a toddler's head on your shoulder, or buckle a baby in their car seat, mindful not to pinch any belly chub in the harness....more
