I Used to Have Ann Romney's Life. I Had Privilege.

Note: This piece was fueled by exasperation and inspired by two excellent blogs posts -- by Grace Hwang Lynch and Pamela Kripke -- that urge those who "got privilege" to name it. I used to have Ann Romney's life. The first time around I married into a family that was rich. Romney Rich....more

Women of Color: The Silent Victims of the Mommy Wars

Apparently, only white women get to argue about whether to stay home or seek employment out of the house. That’s the takeaway I got from the online vitriol sparked last week by Ann Romney and Hillary Rosen. It doesn’t matter whether it’s 2012, 1992, or 1972 — the Mommy Wars continue to pit white, privileged women against even more privileged white women. ...more

Be Green Now: 8 Quick Fixes to Make Your Life a Little More Green

For a long time I felt that being environmentally conscious or "green" was out of my reach. We couldn't afford to buy 100% organic everything or install solar panels on our house and I felt like there wasn't much else I could do.To make myself feel better I focused on the things I was doing and tried not to think about all the chemicals, antibiotics, hormones, and pesticides that were making their way into our home via cleaning products and non-organic food.

Keep Your Friends: Six Tips for Talking Politics Without a Fight

It's campaign season again in America, that wonderful time when the people with whom you get along three out of every four years suddenly chafe you raw with their dinner conversation, their retweets and their Facebook status updates. I myself am among the annoying: I fly my liberal flag pretty much all the time, but I get worse when the rest of the country starts talking issues, too. And I really don't want to lose my friends over our differences of opinion. (Even though I'm right and they're wrong.) ...more

What the Department of Justice Lawsuit Over E-Books Means for Readers

On April 11, 2012, the Department of Justice (DOJ) filed a lawsuit against Apple and five major publishers (Hachette, HarperCollins, Simon & Schuster, Macmillan and Penguin). These five publishers are part of a group known as the Big 6; they are responsible for the publication of many of your favorite books. Stephen King is published by Simon & Schuster, for example. The DOJ accuses these five publishers of making illegal agreements with Apple that have resulted in higher pricing for e-books. ...more

Why do Americans Fight More about Abortion than the Rest of the World?

When I hear or read people proclaiming their pro-life views on behalf of American unborn fetuses, my response is a bone-deep weariness. Cut to the recent comment trail in response to Erica Holloway's "Liberals Don't Own Women's Rights" Election 2012 post, which has spawned some discussion about reproductive rights and what they mean. ...more
